Yesterday, a group of Ottawa residents won a private class action lawsuit to freeze at least 146 cryptocurrency wallets and bank assets tied to the main organizers of Canada’s “Freedom Convoy” in a bid to stanch funding for the ongoing demonstrations.
Known as a Mareva injunction, the lawsuit was filed by Ottawa residents Zexi Li, Geoffrey Devaney, and the Happy Goat Coffee business against key convoy organizers including Chris Barber, Benjamin Dichter, Tamara Lich, and Nicholas St. Louis. The hearing was held in private without public notice or access, lawyer Paul Champ who represents the residents bringing the suit, told The Star, a Toronto-headquartered Canadian newspaper. Li earlier this month won an injunction which barred protesters from honking their horns in downtown Ottawa.
The suit is unprecedented for the country, as it’s the “first time in Canada that a Mareva injunction [has] ever been used to freeze cryptocurrency,” says Matthew Burgoyne, a crypto- and blockchain-focused partner at Calgary-based McLeod Law. He added that the injunction was a powerful legal “remedy which can have significant consequences for a defendant.” The defendants weren’t given advance notice of the suit, says Champ.
Champ, who hired a private investigator and cryptocurrency expert, found that the organizers’ crypto movements outpaced the government’s attempts to track them.
Under the injunction, the named defendants, and those affiliated with them, are restricted from moving fiat and cryptocurrency assets in the bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets specifically named in the suit. The respondents must now respond to the court and “submit to an examination under oath” regarding their assets and what the assets have been used for. The Mareva injunction is only used when there’s a “high risk” that the defendant will “dispose, encumber or…remove its assets from the jurisdiction during the course of litigation,” says Burgoyne.

And they sue for money damages all the time. It's a cornerstone of Western civil law. Impound the trucks, seize the crypto and cash accounts. Let businesses prepare their damage claims and then everyone can show up in civil court, present their cases and settle up.
when a local business and it’s chinese owner hits back.
they are at 4.7 starts on fake book..
either people are not lighting them up or facistbook is deleting bad reviews. (something they refuse to do on my page when a fake review is left about an item I know they didn’t buy)
Actually not, I thought you were just posting for humor's sake.
Try filing a lawsuit based on your lost revenue from being stuck in a traffic jam sometime and tell me how successful it is.
Damages have to be specific, and tied to some actual action by someone against you. Suing for damages due to things like traffic congestion, or customers not coming to your store because the neighborhood is crowded is not and never has been a part of western civil law.
This isn’t a traffic jam. It was planned, organized, coordinated and executed. The point was to shut down the city. And they did. That shut down had a cost. Time to pay up.
I wonder if this will get the Albertan secessionist movement started again.
I’m still kicking :)
Hope you are well.
It would be a terrible shame if the coffee shop never received another delivery ever again. I guess their supplies arrive on the backs of unicorns.
Welcome back!
Hey man :)
Good to be back.
Hey man :)
Good to be back.
crypto is a deep state trap and has been at its inception...this currency is more vulnerable to control than any other type of currencies because of the nature of block chain technology best to diversify everything and have silver and gold stashed away.
So you think you can sue any organization that intentionally causes you to not be able to drive on a few streets in one neighborhood of a city?
Why don't you sue Boston or New York the next time they have a marathon.
Or just sue whoever causes all that disruption when an interstate is being re-paved. They planned, organized, coordinated, and executed the plan that caused all of the drivers to sit for hours.
What is a “secret suit”? You mean the person you are stealing from never was informed there was a suit against them?
How is that okay?
How did you know it was Covid? The PCR test? The PCR test is a FRAUD/LIE as is Covid.
Covid is NOTHING but a bad case of the flu....PERIOD!!
The Big Virus Hoax
Don’t keep your main crypto in an online wallet.
You keep wrongly conflating this with things that it isn’t. It’s not a scheduled one day event or road construction, both of which are provided for by law, scheduled and regulated. Everyone in Boston knows where and when the Marathon will be held. It’s over in a day. The Convoy was designed to illegally shut down the city for a month. Businesses in affected areas will be able to calculate lost revenue for that time. There are standardized formulas for calculating business interruption loss. The claims will be specific and to the dollar.
Since when is prior knowledge, or the duration of some event which causes damage a defense to the damages?
It isn't. You just don't understand damages law.
Go ahead and file a lawsuit the next time some demonstration causes you to think you have been damaged in some way since you couldn't get where you wanted to without delay, or there was an extra long line at your favorite donut shop. Let us know how it turns out.
Thanking the Lord that you are finally over the battle and conquered the evil virus. Also very pleased that you Mom has a 100 proof immune system. I’m 88 and sailed through 4 days of what I think was covid because the symptoms were” different”, but not sick or in pain. I have an immune system that seems to protect me from almost anything. That’s because I have never had vaccines of any kind except for the one Small Pox shot when I was 5 yr. God has been good to me, and I never take it for granted.
