Fed up Ottawa residents win secret suit to freeze the crypto wallets funding Canada’s ‘Freedom Convoy’ protesters

Yesterday, a group of Ottawa residents won a private class action lawsuit to freeze at least 146 cryptocurrency wallets and bank assets tied to the main organizers of Canada’s “Freedom Convoy” in a bid to stanch funding for the ongoing demonstrations.

Known as a Mareva injunction, the lawsuit was filed by Ottawa residents Zexi Li, Geoffrey Devaney, and the Happy Goat Coffee business against key convoy organizers including Chris Barber, Benjamin Dichter, Tamara Lich, and Nicholas St. Louis. The hearing was held in private without public notice or access, lawyer Paul Champ who represents the residents bringing the suit, told The Star, a Toronto-headquartered Canadian newspaper. Li earlier this month won an injunction which barred protesters from honking their horns in downtown Ottawa.

The suit is unprecedented for the country, as it’s the “first time in Canada that a Mareva injunction [has] ever been used to freeze cryptocurrency,” says Matthew Burgoyne, a crypto- and blockchain-focused partner at Calgary-based McLeod Law. He added that the injunction was a powerful legal “remedy which can have significant consequences for a defendant.” The defendants weren’t given advance notice of the suit, says Champ.

Champ, who hired a private investigator and cryptocurrency expert, found that the organizers’ crypto movements outpaced the government’s attempts to track them.

Under the injunction, the named defendants, and those affiliated with them, are restricted from moving fiat and cryptocurrency assets in the bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets specifically named in the suit. The respondents must now respond to the court and “submit to an examination under oath” regarding their assets and what the assets have been used for. The Mareva injunction is only used when there’s a “high risk” that the defendant will “dispose, encumber or…remove its assets from the jurisdiction during the course of litigation,” says Burgoyne.

My understanding is that they sent freeze orders to the wallet software providers, ordering them to freeze the accounts.

And were told that simply isn't possible.

The whole point of crypto is that it's decentralized and anonymous.

The store owners in Ottawa had the local government telling them they should shut down because of the violent rabble in town. Many shut down of their own doing and lost money. If they would have stayed open they would have made a lot of money.

Lanes were always open for vehicles. Those lefties in that city are all mean spirited liars.

I bet the same group of “Ottawa residents” cheered on and celebrated when Antifa and BLM looted and burned Canadian businesses.

Be honest now. What you said may have been sound, but you were cut and pasting it on every thread.

That is what earned you some scorn:)

I got COVID. It was AWFUL.

Ditto. I also got it over the holidays and it took me four weeks to get over most of my COVID symptoms. I am still trying to get over some chronic health issues that flared up for the first time in years during my bout with COVID.

Like nearly everyone else who has had a hard time with COVID, I am well over 60, fat, and have other morbidities. One of my sons, his wife, and their children all contracted COVID last month. They were all over it in a few days.

I am sorry that it exacerbated chronic issues.

I had the same issue. Nerve damage from years ago flared up for about a month after but are now subsiding.

It’s a beast...even my healthy nephew of 33 got it pretty bad (not like us, I’m sure).

Some get it and it’s gone in a few days, some a few weeks, some a month, and some I hear have symptoms for over a year now.

I did reading on why being heavy was bad with COVID.

Apparently it has a blast in the fat and is hard to kill there.

I wish you the best.

Federal, State. County City COVID shut down orders

CHAZ/CHOP style takeovers in Seattle and Portland

BLM/Anita riots that burn and loot

Flash mob store lootings

Ottawa truck blockade

They all have one thing in common. Local business get pounded. Insurance won't cover this crap. These actions are rounding errors for big box operations. But the independent business get creamed.

If people want to play the "I'm mad as hell and I won't take it any more" game, then they should be prepared when local business hits back.

I wish you the best.

You too my friend.

On the plus side, I have lost 30 pounds so far since I contracted COVID, but mostly as a result of the flare up of my chronic intestinal problems. Not a weight loss plan I would recommend.

Oh good, let’s see the names of those Ottawa residents and find out who they work for. Regenve is best served cold, when people no longer expect it.

The idea that citizens can launch lawsuits against groups related to demonstrators and protestors would be very helpful to conservatives if the courts were uniform in their application of the law. Think about the damages that could be charged to liberal political groups for the BLM riot damage.

Ottawa is now a smileless empty dead city.

The leftists on reddit's /r/Ottawa were all cheering on the tyranny so they would not have to walk past the protestors downtown. Too bad, now they won't be able to enter that area at all without going through checkpoints.

“Yep and everyone should boycott the Happy Goat Coffee shop forever as well as any other business that signed onto that.”

I think that will probably happen.

Agree 1000%. And if Nike, Amazon, Google, Twitter and the rest of Silicone Valley contributes to BLM and you can get any kind of criminal conviction attatched to any BLM action, then those companies are complicite in criminal activity and RICO laws should be used to crack their multi billion dollar bank accounts.

I wonder what they will do when the truckers just stop delivering, there aren’t enough union shill truckers to keep Ottawa or Canada functioning if all the protesting truckers refuse to work, even if their rigs and accounts weren’t confiscated. Treat the people you depend on like shit and all you do is crap on yourself.

If they can prove they suffered damages, lost revenue, etc., it sounds like a legitimate course of action.

People suffer damages, and lose revenue all the time as a result of protests, parades, riots, and all kinds of other events. I presume you'll be the first plaintiff in line to sue the DNC, BLM, and all the leftist groups that caused so much damage to our economy, lost revenue, and pain and suffering due to their riots, marches, parades, and policies.

Good luck with your lawsuit!
