WASHINGTON — The 15 boxes of White House records that were stored at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence contained items marked as classified national security information, the National Archives and Records Administration said Friday. The agency said the matter has been referred to the Justice Department.

In a response to a Feb. 9 letter to the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, the National Archives confirmed reports that Trump took government records with him down to Florida when he left office in January 2021.

Wasn’t Trump responsible for classifying them?

BFD. The President can declassify any documents within our government as his will.

He was the President and could say what is classified and what is not.

This^^^

As president he's the sole determiner of what's classified and can do whatever he wants to with it. If he wants to release a TS/SCI document to the press then he's perfectly within his power. He can do whatever he wants to do with classified material.

The president is the highest classification authority in the land. He has the authority to declassify anything he wants. If he says he declassified the documents then they are declassified.

So is the story that in the 15 boxes of documents, he somehow packed them and knows what’s in them all? I can barely keep track of my own relatively few papers.

I would be surprised if the “Resistance” didn’t slip them in.

Were the supposed documents stuffed in his socks Sandy Burglar style?
Unless that were the case, this is another nothing-burger.

If they decide to, they will do it. What are Trump supporters going to do if they do? Fight? When they executed their Coup in 2020 and replaced him with Lying Joe Biden, no one so much as raised an eyebrow. Or even had an unkind thought as far as that goes.

He was the President and could say what is classified and what is not.

Perhaps, but the documents still should have been turned over to the National Archives once he left office. Not the most serious of infractions, but it still allows the media to point figures in Clinton's actions are raised again.

Even if he did (and I rather doubt it), POTUS is the chief of the US national intelligence structure. That position gives him the UNDISPUTED authority to DECLASSIFY anything he wants.

While he was sitting President it could have been TS//SCI and he could have waved his magic president’s wand, declassified it, taken it home to line his cockatoo’s cage, and it would have been PERFECTLY LEGAL.

Whereas Hitlery had no such powers yet she had TOP SECRET//SI//TK//NOFORN on an equally ILLEGAL server in the (unclassified) bathroom closet in her home, both of which are felony violations of 18 U.S. Code § 798.
