Dual citizenship. She couldn’t make the US team so she ‘defected to China’ to make the Chinese team. It was her chance to compete in the Olympics. She’s still a US citizen. She only chose to qualify for the only team she could make it to the Olympics on. Had a GF in high school who was a varsity swimmer and considered trying out for the Pakistan Olympic team since she was born there.
Bad reporting inciting people as usual.
“She’s still a US citizen. “
She renounced it and changed her name in 2018.
She better hope the Chinese don’t think she was sandbagging to help the US.
“She’s still a US citizen.”
I don’t think so.
“California-born figure skater Beverly Zu, 19, is slammed on Chinese social media after finishing LAST on the ice having given up her US citizenship to compete for Communist Beijing in Winter Olympics”
2017–2018 season: U.S. novice title

According to the article she gave up her US citizenship.
Another earlier article on this subject said she was REQUIRED to give up her U.S. citizenship to compete for China. I don’t know if that was something the Chinese government required, or was an Olympic rule.
There's a set procedure that one can follow to formally renounce his/her US citizenship.Having been born in New York City Boris Johnson was a US citizen from birth. But to become Prime Minister of the UK he had to renounce it...which he did.
My guess is that Red China doesn't allow their citizens to hold other citizenships so she renounced her US citizenship to get Red Chinese citizenship.
The same type of thing happened to the woman I'm dating. She got US citizenship and,as a result, automatically lost her South Korean citizenship under ROK law.
Article said she gave up her U.S. citizenship.
That makes sense. Not a traitor, just someone who had no chance to be on the strong USA team.
