TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (TND) — A Democrat who is running to be the next governor of Florida is facing criticism after she openly compared the state's current Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., to Adolf Hitler.
Appearing on NPR's Friday Roundup Podcast, Nikki Fried was asked by the show's co-host Melissa Ross to explain a tweet Fried had made in which she called DeSantis a "dictator".
Ross questions Fried, hoping to clarify: “Are you comparing DeSantis to Hitler?” Ross asks.
“In a lot of ways, yes,” Fried says in response. “I have studied Hitler and how he got to power, you know, wanting his own militia.”
DeSantis has become a popular target for criticism from the left, after becoming one of the first Republican governors to reopen his state during the coronavirus pandemic. Fried, who is currently Florida's agricultural commissioner, is one of the state's most vocal opponents to DeSantis and his policies.
Fried responds to Ross's question by bringing up Florida's Cuban population, who escaped dictatorship to find opportunities in America, saying they are now once again being oppressed by a dictator-esque power in the form of DeSantis' governance.
"[DeSantis] is doing everything possible to take away power from local governments,” Fried says. “Taking away people’s abilities to protest. Making it harder to vote. Talking about banning books... That’s what dictators do. Fried then invokes the Hitler comparison, saying she sees similarities between DeSantis and the infamous Nazi leader."
