The Department of Justice today announced a new rule to help enable the safe and secure storage of firearms and published a Best Practices Guide for federal firearms licensees (FFLs). This new rule implements the existing Gun Control Act requirement that federal firearms licensees that sell firearms to the general public (non-licensees) must certify that they have available secure gun storage or safety devices.
“Today’s announcements build on the department’s efforts to reduce the risk of firearms falling into the wrong hands,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. “Gun safety is a Department of Justice priority, and we will continue to take all appropriate steps to help reduce the number of people killed and injured by the misuse of firearms.”
The Department of Justice has submitted to the Federal Register for publication a final rule, which will take effect Feb. 3, requiring FFLs to certify that they have secure gun storage devices available to their customers for purchase. Secure gun storage or safety device, as defined by statute and regulation, includes a safe, gun safe, gun case, lock box or other device that is designed to be or can be used to store a firearm and that is designed to be unlocked only by means of a key, a combination or other similar means. Not all devices are compatible with varying types of firearms. Therefore, integral to the new rule is the requirement that FFLs have available secure gun storage options that are compatible with the firearms they are selling.

Have they ever been to a gun store?
Clearly another “10% to the big guy” from the safe manufacturers.
Simple.
Just take orders from the customers and then order safes over the internet to be delivered to the customer’s home.
Exactly. I’ve seen gun shops admonish people for holding a gun (unloaded) the wrong way with fingers on the trigger. In my experience, they are the best places to learn.
But the gov-mint sure knows that they better tell these gun rubes how to do business. /sarcasm
Like “Fast and Furious?”
A decent safe cost as much or more that the firearm.
Nobody has to buy one.
They just have to be able to.
Regards Merrick Garland, this crazy a-hole almost made it into the SCOTUS.
Busy bodies. I’ve never been in a place that sells firearms that doesn’t also sell some safes. This might affect small shops that don’t have the space to display a range of safes. Mostly it seems to add another layer of aggravation and paperwork.
The seller could merely offer to store the gun for every customer while knowing that no-one would accept the offer.
There’s a Liberty Safe dealer near me. Some of those damn things cost as much as a small car
My safe is fine, but there’s a reason not all my guns are in it. I want them ready to rock and roll if I need them at a moments notice
Ridiculous on its face.
Improper adoption of “rule”
Per se Unconstitutional
Nobody new will obey it anyway
Just for self- gratification. Will grow hair on their hands. Thry must not be able to do it otherwise
Some of the most profit generating people in the world, when it comes to guns-ammo-accessories, are Democrats. Has to make you wonder what’s in their stock portfolio’s.
Three of the most ardent gun control advocates: CornPop, Soetero and PIAPS, have done more for the gun industry than Samuel Colt and John Browning. Much to the chagrin of guys like me, who don’t panic buy and hoard.
I can see it here in NH.
Them: Do you have a gun safe?
Customer: Yes.
Them: Ok
Or……..
Them: Do you have a gun safe?
Customer: No.
Them: Buy one.
Customer: I will.
Them: Ok.
If the state even decides to go along with it instead of just telling the feds to go pound sand.
This sounds like what is or likely is already occuring. Is this new regulation simply for show to say they are doing something or is it part of a bigger picture?
An ordinary padlock, snapped behind the trigger, renders many revolvers “safe”.
And how many revolver owners do that? It renders it Useless.
Good! Now every federal, State and local officer, including the military and Brandon’s secret service will have to keep their firearms locked up.
Anyone know how to put a lock on the gun on a tank?
