A dry new year's weekend for Texas: State law keeps liquor stores closed

HOUSTON — Thousands of people moved to Texas again this year, and if you’re one of them, you may not be aware of some of the unusual laws we have, especially those that deal with buying alcohol.

All liquor stores are closed in Texas on New Year’s Day and lots of folks had no idea.

(Snip)

“ The state law reads that every liquor store in the state of Texas has to be closed on Sundays, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day."

The law is among what are known as the state’s “blue laws” regulating when hard alcohol can be sold.

New Year’s Day was added to the list in 1979.

"The majority of fatality traffic accidents involving innocent people, including the smallest children, are driven by alcohol consumption."

100% of fatality traffic accidents involve automobiles. If you really want to get at the root of the problem you could start by banning those.

“Gay marriage, which I personally find disgusting, I will have to think about.”

Of course you will. Can’t be violating your own orthodoxy.

Nearly all accidents are avoidable. That’s why we have traffic laws.

Alcohol is a decisive factor in slowing reaction time and impairing judgement.

I’m not knocking your right as an individual to hate it, the US Constitution grants you that right as an individual. Just saying at some point reality should come into play. The ten commandments didn’t work either. No matter what you do it is not going to stop it. It is unrealistic to even think so. It has already been tried... Even “No Dumping Here” signs do not work.

Unfortunately you just can’t change human nature as hard as you try.

No, can't have that.

I don't drink coffee, but my wife does. She would be very upset if the government banned caffeine products. Chocolate too.

At any rate, I've got to go about my business. I've enjoyed our colloquy. Happy New Year to you and yours!

I liked the strict old blue laws if for nothing else than it made Sunday a peaceful day. So restful.

Perhaps we should enact traffic laws making it illegal to drive while impaired or under the influence of alcohol.

No it makes you oblivious to human nature. Washington State for the past several years has made possession of “personal amounts” of ALL DRUGS legal.

Know what that has accomplished? Seattle has the 2nd largest community of drug vagrants in the nation. If you adjust it for population, it is probably #1.

Street crime, carjackings, robberies, (cops found a guy with a makeshift gun range, targets on a tree, last week in one of the drug vagrant campgrounds in a city park), murders sex trafficking and every crime statistic is being affected by losers coming here for drugs without consequences.

Know what else? Cartel violence on the streets of an American city. You want to live around that Mr. Pious?

Unfortunately we must have standards in society or it breaks down, open your eyes around America today, that Libertarian idea about drug consumption in theory sounds proper but it will not work.

Yep, that should work real well.

"I wish Texas would restrict booze outright."

Texas can't even control their own blowhard mall/blog cops. What makes you think they could regulate alcohol consumption?

“Times were different then.”

I remember those days. Back in the 70s I used to drive to Salina, Kansas from Nashville to deliver steel. When I turned around I would load my truck with as much Coors as I could because back East they thought it was a delicacy. I sold it on Sunday too.

You would think that the concept that the government that can tell you what you CAN’T put into your body, will also be the government that can tell you what you MUST put into your body, would have sunk in by now.

Gay marriage, which I personally find disgusting, I will have to think about.
~~~~
Call it what you will. Yes, it’s disgusting ....but it’s NOT marriage. Marriage is between one man and one woman.
“Gay marriage” has two purposes:
1. To create a positive perception of people with a disgusting, addictive mental illness.
2. To force a legal framework on employers which forces them to pay for treating the illnesses which male homosexuals pass around their ranks.
Shouldn’t you have gotten your liquor before New Year’s Eve?
Unfortunately you just can’t change human nature as hard as you try.
That should never stop a sane society from acting to restrain evil.
By your logic, we should just throw up our hands and rescind all laws since the laws can’t change human nature.
Hasn’t worked since Moses. So might as well. You can pass all the laws you want and it will not stop those who do not respect them. What they do though is also restrict and create hardships for those moral who do want to respect law.
Example the 2nd amendment. The twisting of the 2nd has only harmed law abiding citizens by hampering their ability to defend themselves against the immoral. The immoral are still going to break these laws anyhow, so the laws do more damage than good.
