U.S. stock markets opened sharply lower Friday morning as investors grappled with the fears of a new Covid variant found in South Africa but now spreading to Asia and Europe.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by as much as 890 points, or around 2.5 percent, after the opening bell. The S&P 500 tumbled 1.9 percent and the Nasdaq Composite slipped by 1.4 percent. The small-cap Russell 2000 sank 3.25 percent.

During the lockdowns in the spring of 2020, the markets tanked from the low 30K’s to roughly 18K. Recovered over a few weeks. Great opportunity to buy. Just keep the ol eyes peeled for an entry point.
There is an old joke among epidemiologists. “The human race given just one significant mutation in a pathogen faces extinction.” Would not dismiss this new variant out of hand until more is learned. BTW restricting travel and more lockdowns won’t do much good.

Dr. Fauci wants to wait and see before stopping flights from South Africa...wait for it to get here then ban them, I guess, when it will make no difference.
And keep using the same vaccine formulation for the original virus as well long after that is no longer the variant of the virus circulating...I guess to get rid of old stock.
Bingo. COVID is fully baked in. That is a ridiculous reason.

I understand and even agree with the complete lack of trust in what the authorities say about anything Covid. In fact, the WHO is mostly in control of reporting from Africa and I trust them even less than the CDC based on past behavior.
Is there a new variant? It is possible. In fact, many of the doctors cited by those skeptical of our public health response (me too) to all things Covid have warned that there will be variants of the disease in part driven by leaky vaccines and in part by natural evolution.
The irony to me is not that there is a new variant (seems certain to happen - much like “influenza”) but that the same public health people are telling us that a vaccine designed for the original variant that has not worked against the current variant (Delta) is the only answer for the new variant.
What a mess. Is it real or not real? I don’t know. What I do know is that I do not trust Fauci. He was wrong then, wrong now, and based on past performance will be wrong in the future.
