The jury has reached a verdict in the trial of Travis McMichael and his father, Gregory, and their neighbor, William "Roddie" Bryan.
The three men, who are white, each face charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal attempt to commit a felony in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery, 25, who was Black, on Feb. 23, 2020, in Georgia.
They face up to life in prison if convicted of the more serious charges.
The nearly all-white jury, which has one Black member, began deliberating the men's fate on Tuesday.
“Arbery grabbed McMichael Jrs gun and fought him for it. Arbery lost”
From what I understand, since Arbery was illegally detained, McMichael Jr loses his claim of self defense. If the McMichaels were police officers however, it’s interesting that qualified immunity would likely come into play after Arbery grabbed the gun, and they likely wouldn’t have been charged.
They weren’t very sympathetic looking defendants
Kyle had the innocence factor working for him
Both in looks and evidence
Well they didn’t have trucks. And the victim would have been a slave and they could have done whatever they wanted to him without fear of punishment. So you are correct.
Stupid, stupid
STUPID!”
People forget that under the Law of Nature, stupidity is often a capital offense.
I agree with you. This guy was no innocent “jogger”, and I understand going out to detain him. However, this got out of hand and did not meet requirements for self defense.
Who's with me?!
Their defense was the archaic 1863 Runaway Slave Laws....
All three guilty of murder. That’s appropriate.
Since the police were looking for Arbery I don’t see how he could be classed as “illegally detained”. McMichael Sr had been a cop for 30 years. He knew Arbery and knew his record. Arbery knew him too.
I didn’t follow this closely, but from what I heard, it did feel like they played deeply into some bad stereotypes of local joe 6pack types.
Defense lawyer will say jury intimidated because riots would ensue if found not guilty.
“All three guilty of murder. That’s appropriate”.
I agree. They reached the right verdicts.
Guilty in my state. The jury will speak for Georgia.
Correct, neither you or I were there.
The other side of the argument you're making is "fight or flight" when fear takes over. It's reasonable IMO to assume that Arbery believed his life was in danger and "fight" took over.
I think if you polled FR, it'd be fairly split down the middle of who'd fight and who'd run in a case where three people have confronted/cornered you and one has a gun.
I don’t understand the guilty verdict for Malice Murder, though. Wouldn’t they have had to intended to murder him?
I expected this verdict.
I think it is terribly unjust.
Arbery could have just kept running. He could have stopped and waited for the cops to arrive. Instead he attacked Travis McMichael, grabbed his gun, and struck him in the head repeatedly.
I think the shooting was legitimate self defense.
I think it was the right verdict.
But I will throw this thought out there....I’m just not convinced they deserve the rest of their life in jail.
Now I do understand that the crime calls for life in jail but ....well you didn’t expect me to have the answer did you?
add in that Arberry didn’t handle it right.
I say they deserve ten years in jail.
I don’t know how such a thing would happen but if it were possible that would be a proper punishment as I see it.
Correct and all accounts.
