Target stores will no longer be open on Thanksgiving, CEO says

Target stores will no longer open their doors on Thanksgiving Day.

The change, which was announced to employees on Monday, comes after the big-box retailer closed its stores on the holiday last year in an effort to limit crowds and ensure customer safety due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Target and other retailers have traditionally opened on Thanksgiving to capitalize on Black Friday, the start of the holiday sales rush.

“What started as a temporary measure driven by the pandemic is now our new standard — one that recognizes our ability to deliver on our guests’ holiday wishes both within and well beyond store hours,” Target CEO Brian Cornell said in a note to employees first obtained by the Associated Press.

good. We have only WM here where I am and they only close on Christmas. Hopefully they will follow Target’s lead and close this year.

Trying to reduce undocumented shoppers no doubt…

Undocumented Shoppers

Heh-heh, good one! Need to slap a rap-sheet document on each one, no admittance without a clean record.

Finally stores are deciding "screw that" and having their Black Friday specials starting the weekend before Thanksgiving, and not doing ridiculous things just to attract crowds.

Correct. Although it was painful to watch stores screw their employees by opening on Thanksgiving, once they broke that milestone, there was no reason to start their sales a day earlier but can instead start them on November 1st. The dotcom business were doing it already.

Good. They dont need to open Thanksgiving day. Other places dont either.

Black Friday’s purpose is about done anyway as more people shop online. And since Black Friday turns businesses into a WWF arena, or stampede, there is no point.

I remember malls would open a whole hour early on Friday. Then they just kept backing the clock up. People camp out waiting to get in????? Now, Thanksgiving is lost in the commercialization of holidays.

I’m so old I remember the “Blue Laws” that made it illegal for any store to be open on ANY SUNDAY in the entire year.

Things were a lot better back then.

Blue laws in the south also. We had 3 drugstores and 2 gas stations. They took turns. One of each would be open on Sunday. Unheard of to be “open” on Thanksgiving or Christmas. “Christmas parade” was the Saturday *after* Thanksgiving. And the first day of deer hunting season was and still is an “unofficial” holiday. ;)

I DO NOT BELIEVE this is based on any consideration of their employees or families; it’s just a business calculation they made, cost of labor vs. the income for one day. ‘Woke’ businesses are like that.

No sense spending the money to extend hours when there’s no competition. They are all supply bound, not sales bound.

“he change comes after the big-box retailer closed its stores on the holiday last year in an effort to limit crowds and ensure customer safety due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

by that logic, shouldn’t target also close on Black Friday? Actually, maybe by that logic, target should close their stores on ALL of their most busiest days ...
