‘Almost schizophrenic’: Judge rips DOJ approach to Jan. 6 prosecutions
Politico ^ | Oct 28, 2021 | Kyle Cheney and Josh Gerstein

Posted on 10/28/2021 2:33:43 PM PDT by where's_the_Outrage?

Afederal judge thrashed the Justice Department on Thursday for offering “petty offense” plea deals to Jan. 6 defendants who she said tarnished America’s reputation in the world and enabled violent rioters to threaten the peaceful transfer of power — even if they committed no violence themselves.....

Howell then made clear that she considered all participants in the Jan. 6 Capitol breach — which the Justice Department now estimates at 2,000 to 2,500 people — enablers of an assault against the republic.

“The damage to the reputation of our democracy, which is usually held up around the world … that reputation suffered because of Jan. 6,” Howell said, noting that the mob chased lawmakers and Vice President Mike Pence into hiding, and sent staffers ducking under their desks for cover.....

Howell said there were indications that prosecutors had displayed “sort of an evolving, changing position” in their sentencing recommendations related to Jan. 6. But she noted that federal law requires judges to avoid unwarranted disparities when sentencing defendants for similar conduct.....

Howell noted that even if every rioter paid the $500, it would amount to about $300,000, which she called “barely a drop in the bucket.” She estimated that the total cost of the riot — based on government spending to reimburse law enforcement agencies and repair damage to the Capitol — exceeded $560 million.

People alive at the founding knew how to deal with such “judges”.

I doubt the damage even amounted to $150 bucks. A broken door window and Pelosis lecturn moved.

I’m sure the $560M figure includes the cost of Nancy Pelosi’s publicity stunt bringing in troops to sit around with nothing to do for weeks on end. Probably also includes the cost of the pointless congressional investigations.

“Jan. 6 defendants who she said tarnished America’s reputation in the world”

It wasn’t they who did it, it was democrats who lied about it.

Good to know we still have idiots in black ropes who don’t even know we are not a democracy.

This judge is a moron.

" . . . which the Justice Department now estimates at 2,000 to 2,500 people . . . "

Of which probably 2,000 were waved in by police, did no damage whatsoever, and assaulted no one. And of the other 500 or so, probably only about 100-150 were involved in the original fighting with police and the breach of the perimeter.

Reputation crime, that’s a new one on me. This judge thinks having the reputation of a Soviet-style court system is just great.

It was the second impeachment. If the Republicans joined with the RATs they could have prevented him from ever running again. That is how they controlled his pardons.

That's a lousy excuse.

I suppose they forced him to pardon Kwame Kilpatrick, Rod Blagojevich, and a host of Wall Street embezzlers, bribe takers, and fraudsters as well? Meanwhile, Julian Assange languishes in a UK prison awaiting extradition and Edward Snowden remains in exile in Russia.

And how much of the $110 million that he's raised so far to "Stop the Steal" has he spent on their defenses? These were his staunchest supporters and they're twisting in the wind.

The term “our democracy” is such a tell at this point.

The USA, as founded, is a republic.

“Our democracy” is a tell for those who want Venezuela, etc. style government. Totalitarianism wrapped in “democracy”.

We can all agree on that.
The Branding of 1/6 as an “insurrection” is not going to last.

It’s the media again lying to the public, taking specific photos and claiming it’s a riot when in fact it was just a crowd of people then claiming it was an insurrection when it was no such thing. And they lock up all these innocent tourists and patriots and charge them with “trespassing” when in fact they were let in by none other than the Capital police.

The media is the #1 enemy of this country.

When a judge projects this much personal bias against the defendants, she should be recused from the case. There is a reason most of the defendants were only charged with misdemeanor charges. Most simply committed trespass, and there were very few of them.
