Don’t be deluded about how important slaves were to Northerners. First of all, slavery was allowed, period, including in “loyal” states. Abolitionists were not overwhelming. Just like today’s liberals, they were the loudest and the most obvious for same. Plenty of Yankees said they were not interested in dying for some black slave.

Actually genuine grammatical fanatics would argue the opposite. The problem is that one of the most natural verb forms in speech is the subjunctive which is used to express hope, fear, uncertainy, tentiveness, conditionality, etc. Unfortunately one of the mania's in so-called English education has been to drive the subjunctive out of the language, with the College Board which runs the SATs right at the top of the list.
If you admit the subjunctive then a correct English expression is "If I were king, I would abolish Taco Tuesday." The were is subjunctive and derives from the equivalent Anglo-Saxon verb form There is/was a present tense English subjunctive which uses the form "be." So, "He be lying" is actually a correct grammatical expression, as in "I think he be lying." vs "I think he is lying." The former is a tentative hypothesis; the latter a statement of fact that could engender a slander suit if you are wrong. But it takes modern Marxists to excise a natural form of expression that exists in almost every classical language in the world. We lose because our language is less rich as a consequence.

The bottom line is that if it were not for the unfortunate existence of slavery in North America, then those American descendants of slaves (including those alive today) never would have existed. It is only through slavery that these certain people actually met and procreated. As distasteful as slavery is to us today, it is the only reason many people are here as genetically unique living, breathing human beings today. Some good can come from bad.
