The NFL is reviewing Gruden’s status with the Raiders for potential discipline, a source familiar with the matter told the Journal.

Hunter Biden did the same, and they love him.

Indeed, an observation is not a racist remark. HIs lips are indeed the size of a Michelin tire.
Actually it was Howard Cosell who said of a black receiver 'look at that little monkey run' or words to that effect. He survived. Jimmy the Greek referenced slave-owners breeding practices which got him fired.
I think the media is getting rid of two white coaches, to make room for black coaches.
“...in an email sent to a team executive...”
Meaning, it was not meant for public consumption. Since Smith is the head of the Players Union, he must have come down on Gruden over some union issue. Otherwise, the whole response seems to be out of the blue.
I would guess that the team executive wants Gruden gone and is using this to take him out. No guy in his right mind with employees under him who are 70% black would be dumb enough to say this unless he thought it was just a one-to-one conversation.
This reminds me of Nixon’s Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz, who was ratted out to the media regarding some racial jokes he told to John Dean (of Watergate fame) who claimed the jokes were spoken during an airline flight the two were on and Butz presumed it was a one-to-one verbal communication.
I’m not trying to defend Gruden’s comments, just trying to find a context for them because it is just breathtakingly stupid to send such thoughts to a team executive otherwise.
“Rubber lips” as in “liar”. I guess the Earth is going to cave in on itself.
i remember Howard Cosell said “look at that little monkey run”.....
“I would guess that the team executive wants Gruden gone and is using this to take him out.“
Gruden coached for a different team when the email was written. (Redskins)
but he was just stating facts
Awfully close. Not sure I see where the problem is.
This crap gets so old, this is something from 10 years ago. Lets do a deep dive on everyone and see who comes out alive..geesh!
WSJ says he was at espn back then. MNF probably
Your quote is correct. What saved Cosel was that Muhammad Ali came out and defended him, telling everyone that the remark was not meant in a racist way. It was good of Ali to do that.
Heard Cosells real name was Howard Cohen....didn’t want anyone to know he was Jewish.
Ali was a different person in the 80s, supported Reagan, pretty much left his past behind.
You know not of what you speak.
I thought Jimmy the Greek said the blacks can’t/won’t swim. Who was it said that? Some sports guy I think.
People really should be a bit mindful of what they say, I mean, I like Gruden enough but why insult the guy’s looks? In an email?
"Mick Jagger's lips are so big, even black people go, 'He got some big ass lips!'" - Eddie Murphy
Al Campanis, a senior Dodgers executive at the time he said that.
Loose shoes, tight *****, and a warm place to take a dump. Yes, the estimable John Dean, the rat of all rats.
