“...in an email sent to a team executive...”
Meaning, it was not meant for public consumption. Since Smith is the head of the Players Union, he must have come down on Gruden over some union issue. Otherwise, the whole response seems to be out of the blue.
I would guess that the team executive wants Gruden gone and is using this to take him out. No guy in his right mind with employees under him who are 70% black would be dumb enough to say this unless he thought it was just a one-to-one conversation.
This reminds me of Nixon’s Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz, who was ratted out to the media regarding some racial jokes he told to John Dean (of Watergate fame) who claimed the jokes were spoken during an airline flight the two were on and Butz presumed it was a one-to-one verbal communication.
I’m not trying to defend Gruden’s comments, just trying to find a context for them because it is just breathtakingly stupid to send such thoughts to a team executive otherwise.
“I would guess that the team executive wants Gruden gone and is using this to take him out.“
Gruden coached for a different team when the email was written. (Redskins)
Loose shoes, tight *****, and a warm place to take a dump. Yes, the estimable John Dean, the rat of all rats.
