Facebook is down, and not in a minor way. The Big Tech mammoth is down worldwide in a way in which they will not be able to easily recover as the DNS A and AAA records have been deleted. Technically speaking, facebook.com is now for sale.
They’re not alone. Instagram, WhatsApp, and others have also been affected in the same way. It’s clearly a coordinated attack on a massive scale, though it’s unclear how it was pulled off. We’re not talking about a simple DDoS attack. This is catastrophic and would have required high-level access to certain protocols that one cannot get from the outside.

Just nonsense as is typical of the author of this article. I'd tend to agree, but I'm trying to sort out who this
Sheera Frenkel is. Apparently she is a "prize-winning technology reporter based in San Francisco." And she is reporting on
twitter about employees being locked out of buildings.
I haven't the slightest idea about her past reporting.
She may be a quack too for all I know. But she's an additional voice to that of Rucker.
I'm not being so quick to write this off as a simple routine outage requiring a few reboots or dns updates.

My wife just got on using her smart phone. I’ve never been on facebook myself.
You can "get on". The problem is that you can no longer post/comment etc. No new content is appearing on people's feeds. So you can still see stuff that is hours old, but nothing new. Have her try to comment on something.
