While debt ceiling talks have put Social Security payments in the news, one topic that's been put on the back burner is a deadline Congress faces to shore up the program.
Social Security's trust funds for retirement and disability benefits are projected to be able to pay only 78% of promised benefits by 2034.
To fix that, Congress could consider several major adjustments. Here's what they could mean.....
In just 13 years the trust funds Social Security relies on to pay retirement and disability benefits will be depleted, according to the most recent Social Security trustees' report.
While benefit checks will still go out, just 78% of promised benefits will be payable at that time.

Just say you’ll take the money out of the general fund and stop threatening people. Of course that’s what will happen.
Lots of people on SS disability who are pretending to be disabled. I know one young guy who is perfectly fine, but claims to have a psychological disability (which is basically he is too neurotic to work). This kid has basically sold his future for a $400/month SSDI payment.
Personally, I expect my own benefits to be cut substantially. While I paid plenty into the fund, I am relatively well off, so that is that.

This way they can eliminate the old folks real quick. They want to get rid of the old White people, and this will work. Covid didn’t kill enough of them, so starvation will.
What they are doing now is giving infinitesimal increases each year that force you to fall behind. Rising prices all around will have cut the value of what you receive so much that it is a joke.
But they will increase the benefits for the favored ones, the ones who will always be dependent on government, and who will never become productive citizens.

I guess that's what they call a pay as you go plan.
I figure that all that I have paid in over my working career will go toward paying for a couple of nice dinners a month. I won’t need it to live on as I was fortunate enough to make and invest well over my working years. Still working at at 62.
My biggest concern isn the socialist taking my massive investments and savings away from me. That is the unfair situation of our current regime

I was watching Judge Judy one day and to her credit she always asks what means of support does the defendant or plaintiff have and Social Security disability always comes up. She asks the nature of their disability and once the woman said she had a gambling addiction. SS for a gambling addiction. SS is so rife with fraud it is incredible.
They will do means testing. If you tried hard to do the best you can to keep your finances in order by saving and investing, you won’t get anything, or will get less than you should. It will be simply another form of wealth redistribution.
No talk of the welfare money running out.
We could save a boatload of money by making everyone re-apply for SS Disability. Most of them only got it because they used a lawyer
Well wait a minute. I was just told they good spend as much as terry wanted and it didn’t matter.
And funny how social security is going to collapse but they still have money to give to the Taliban (yes, we give them foreign aid.). We still have money to spend on communist China. We have money to send soldiers to the communist Chinese games, we have money to put another couple million Haitians, Mexicans, Guatemalans, moslems on welfare. A few billion to Ukraine. NATO, planned parenthood, etc etc. We have money to waste every way imaginable.
But social security gets austerity.

That’s because they know they will vote to keep their benefits
