BEIJING (AP) — China’s government banned effeminate men on TV and told broadcasters Thursday to promote “revolutionary culture,” broadening a campaign to tighten control over business and society and enforce official morality.
President Xi Jinping has called for a “national rejuvenation,” with tighter Communist Party control of business, education, culture and religion. Companies and the public are under increasing pressure to align with its vision for a more powerful China and healthier society.
The party has reduced children’s access to online games and is trying to discourage what it sees as unhealthy attention to celebrities.
Broadcasters must “resolutely put an end to sissy men and other abnormal esthetics,” the TV regulator said, using an insulting slang term for effeminate men — “niang pao,” or literally, “girlie guns.”
That reflects official concern that Chinese pop stars, influenced by the sleek, girlish look of some South Korean and Japanese singers and actors, are failing to encourage China’s young men to be masculine enough.
Broadcasters should avoid promoting “vulgar internet celebrities” and admiration of wealth and celebrity, the regulator said. Instead, programs should “vigorously promote excellent Chinese traditional culture, revolutionary culture and advanced socialist culture.”
Xi’s government also is tightening control over Chinese internet industries.
It has launched anti-monopoly, data security and other enforcement actions at companies including games and social media provider Tencent Holding and e-commerce giant Alibaba Group that the ruling party worries are too big and independent.
Rules that took effect Wednesday limit anyone under 18 to three hours per week of online games and prohibit play on school days.
Game developers already were required to submit new titles for government approval before they could be released. Officials have called on them to add nationalistic themes.
The party also is tightening control over celebrities.

If there are no sissy men on Chinese TV, what will be shown in Xhinese airport terminals instead of CNN?
Now there's something I can get behind.
“... but it would be nice if American media and schools did not promote homosexuality and transgenderism.”
As America transforms into a nation of angry women accompanied by scared, self loathing sissies, they will all wonder why China is kicking the stuffings out of them.
So they banned CNN?
If the US banned sissy men from TV, we would never see bidet or most of the male democrats again.
China sees a problem with these people.
Maybe China will start to force American movies the same way.
Finally, a good reason to love how China controls our media!
Go China!
America’s media and entertainment industries are chock full of sissy men. Every show, every movie, every commercial - it’s sickening.
What about interracial couples in commercials? Same sex couples? Are manly lesbians OK?
Are honkies the criminals on their tv as well?
Here at home we apparently just commit crimes, or we are borderline mentally retarded husbands.
Thank God, women are so wise and logical…
America, take note. This is what your enemy is doing to become stronger.
I wish we still had good action movies where the lead was like Dirty Harry instead of these Marvel and DC style soyboys who get special powers from a suit. Maybe China is on to something.
Do they still do that??... I thought I read a while ago that CNN lost all those rights(even though they paid for it) across the board.
That might be an imperfect translation but a pretty perfect metaphor too.
I’m wondering the same thing. With so many companies bowing to China already, how will this effect American entertainment? Wil they allow Hollywood to continue on the alphabet people crusade to weaken us, or will they ban that type from being shown in China? And how much will Hollywood bend?
Well, that should get a stern response from the LGBT* crowd! Oh wait, no criticism of the ChiComs by the leftists.
That was my first thought. I don't condone government controlling the lives of their citizens but it's easy to see that China is taking a long term view of their place in the world.
China is preparing their citizens for world domination.
Similar to what Nazi Germany did in the early 1930s when they were gaining absolute power. They started banning what they considered degenerate arts and culture. Then they put their children, especially the boys, into para-military youth organizations to toughen them up and build them into the "master race" that would rule the world.
