The 'Absolute Worst Thing' That Could Happen to the Electric Vehicle Industry Right Now Just Did

GM announced that it has issued a recall on every single Chevy Bolt made to date due to the battery fire risk. The move comes after two previous recalls, which were aimed at specific models.

The Bolt was first recalled in November after five cars that hadn’t been in crashes caught fire. After investigating the problem further, Chevy recalled a second batch in July. The problem was traced to two manufacturing defects that could occur simultaneously. The defects—a torn anode tab and a folded separator—created conditions that could lead to a short in affected cells. So far, the company has identified 10 fires that involve faulty batteries, according to an AP report. This third and latest recall includes 73,000 Bolts made from 2019 to 2022, the current model year, and brings the total recall to nearly 142,000 cars, with over 100,000 having been sold in the US. GM estimates that the initial recalls will cost $800 million, and it expects the new one to add $1 billion to the total. GM said it will be seeking reimbursement from LG. […]

We’ve owned 2001 and 2011 GMC pickups. Zero problems.

Just had my relatively loud 03 Mach 1 out. Hadn’t driven it for three weeks and was forced to get on it a little bit. An electric car can never sound or feel like that. I am glad I am old and will never drive a silent car.

Cars that burst into flames are a GM tradition.

If you are old enough you can remember the Corvair Monza and slighty younger Freepers may remember the Pontiac Fiero (because Firebird was already taken?).

Or of kids who died in the third world mines working as slaves overseen by warlords paid for by China. But trees are apparently more important than human beings to tree-hugging fanatics.

that also assumes the more complicated hybrid has the same, or lower cost of ownership per mile.

one out of warranty battery failure will wipe out all the gas savings.

Immediate pithy rejoinder; how much coal was burned to recharge it?

“For all you Chevy Bolt owners on FR ‘s”

I drive a Club Car, but only on weekends. It’s fun to drive but you have to make 70-80 stops every trip.

An acquaintance on FB posted that in 7300 miles her Tesla told her she saved 292 gallons of gas, and 339 trees. She was so proud, you could tell she wanted everyone to know that she was smart, and superior. Interestingly, no mention of load on the grid, nor of the environmental impact of lithium batteries.
************
Or how about the morality of making the taxpayers finance her car — assuming their wants and needs are inferior to hers.

well technically, there is only 2 largeAmerican car companies left.

GM and Ford.

Chrysler/ram is Italian now.

I have NO complaints about my F-150 with the 5.0 V8
I Guess Tesla is American too.

Gasoline carbecues are a thing too.

They don’t burn for days.

Bingo. And our tyrannical government is mandating everything. There’s no room left for personal liberty or freedom. They want it ALL.

Actually “Chrysler” is now part of Stellantis now which is Dutch, composed of a merger of PSA (Peugeot, Citroen, Opel, Vauxhall) and Fiat/Chrysler.

“I Guess Tesla is American too”.

Yeah.

I wonder how long their cars will last and how robust they are.

Tough call when the battery cells are Chinese. The manufacturing defect could be in GM’s supply chain. Good luck getting that firm to shoulder the costs of the recall.

Afghanistan has the world’s largest deposits of lithium. When the Chinese move in, battery makers will be screwed.

LOL.

I’m still waiting for someone to make a trash compactor for cars.
By the time I grab lunch on the way to the mail box for the daily dose of junk mail then blow my nose a couple times the floor in front of the passenger seat looks like a hazard zone.
