The lack of training, maintenance and access to spare parts will limit how long the stranded equipment remains a viable threat.
The ground maintenance per flight hour is high. Without trained tech and equipment (and don’t forget the reams of maintenance docs they keep on every part and service op), these Blackhawks will be getting sun faded in a grassy field pretty quick.
They won’t care. They will fly them until they fall from the sky................
The fact that they only ground taxied it probably means they had a ‘copter pilot, he just couldn’t satisfy himself it was safe to fly (or maybe he was afraid his fellow Islamo-fascists would shoot him down if he did). Might even have been a defector from the Afghan air force.
If it had been a garden-variety Taliban who just got lucky and figured out how to get the turbines started, he probably would have got froggy and convinced himself that Allah would protect him and decided he’d take it off.
And as soon as he broke ground he’d have found out that hovering a helicopter is a lot like riding a unicycle on top of a beach ball. The guys who know how make it look too easy, but the learning takes practice ... and a second pilot to keep you from killing yourself while you’re learning how.
We have a helicopter school near here.
We also have a lot of helicopter crashes near here for some odd reason..............
LOL, I used to eye the Aviation Machinist Mates like me as they clustered, grimy and greasy around that rotor head, and would think “Damn, there are just too many moving parts on that thing for me to feel safe!”
Then when someone told me what the “Jesus Nut” was, I burst out laughing!
