Henri formed in the mid-Atlantic. After initially following a loopy southward and westward track, Henri is forecast to move northward toward New England.

I actually remember that storm……It was just before my 6th birthday……2 windows blew in .
.
I lived in southern Maine when Gloria hit.
One gust of wind took out three trees that took out all utility lines.
Another gust of wind knocked down a separate huge tree that crashed into the driveway blocking it.
It took the power company two weeks before they were able to restore power to the house. They had to use an industrial size chain saw attached to a separate vehicle to remove the trees.
Where I live now there are no trees than can take out the power lines to my house—I have removed them....you only need to learn that lesson once...
;-)
I believe you are referring to a portion of Long Is. NY. when you say Great South Bay.
I would bet they were caught off guard with little or no mention of the impending 1938 hurricane just like we were in Boston.- Tom
“My God, it was something devastating – and unreal – like the beginning of the world – or the end of it – and I slogged and sloshed, crawled through ditches and hung on to keep going somehow – got drenched and bruised and scratched – completely bedraggled – finally got to where there was a working phone and called Dad. The minute he heard my voice he said, ‘How’s your mother?’ – And I said – I mean shouted – the storm was screaming so – ‘She’s all right. All right, Dad! But listen, the house – it’s gone – blown away into the sea!” And he said, ‘I don’t suppose you had brains enough to throw a match into it before it went, did you? It’s insured against fire, but not against blowing away! – and how are you?’” https://www.historybyzim.com/2015/07/katharine-hepburn-the-new-england-hurricane-of-1938/
Yes, the Great South Bay separates LI from Fire Island.
Exciting weekend ahead! It will be a memorable time with family. 😉
Not as bad as the one in the late 30s. That one was a cat 3. My father in law in Pawtucket said it was really something.
Power outage protocols—make sure at least one bath-tub is filled with water after everyone takes a shower Sunday morning.
A Hurricane Warning is in effect for...
* South shore of Long Island from Fire Island Inlet to Montauk Point
* North shore of Long Island from Port Jefferson Harbor to Montauk Point
* New Haven Connecticut to west of Watch Hill Rhode Island

Nope - we stayed in the barracks right thru the storm - fortunately the eye passed about 50 miles out. With some help from Pat Robertson:
LA Times: Robertson asserts that Hurricane Gloria veered away from the Virginia coast after he and his staff prayed that it would.
A combination of decreasing shear, improved organization, and
upper-level divergence associated with the trough to the west
should allow Henri to strengthen for the next 24 h or so, and the
new intensity forecast calls for a peak intensity of 75 kt. After
24 h, the center should move over cooler water, and weakening
should start before landfall in the northeastern United States.
However, the cyclone is still expected to be at or near hurricane
intensity at landfall. After landfall, Henri should weaken quickly
and become post-tropical by the 72 h time.
Thank you for this thread, FRiend! Never thought we'd be contending with a 'Hurricane' heading toward us here in New England. But, it DOES happen, from time to time.
Thanks for your 11pm ET update. I hope and pray Henri weakens before he gets near land in the US. We don't live on the coast here in The People's Republik of Connecticut, but... we are still expecting extended power outages. :-(
As of right now (12:11 am ET), we are still under 'Hurricane Warning' via Weather.com.

GRR! I have no idea why my comments double-posted above! Sorry ‘bout that.
My grandfather had old news clippings of that amazing storm.
CT Gov. Lamont: 'Expect to shelter in place' as Henri prompts hurricane warnings in CT
Same here. My grandparents - and parents - always spoke about the awful "Hurricane of '38" here in New England. I wish they were still around now to tell me more about it...
We last visited Coney Island about 20 years ago (it was before 9/11/01, I think). At that time, yes, The Cyclone was still there.
Oh wow... I hope and pray that Henri doesn’t take that same track as the 1938 hurricane (as seen in your graphic). That would be a direct hit over where we live now. :-(
That's really sweet... NICE place! Montauk Point probably was a lot nicer back then before all the libs took over the area. My parents honeymooned in NYC. (I think my grandparents honeymooned in Niagara Falls, lol)
