Yikes, Tahoe chipmunks are very friendly. They’ll come sit on your knee and take peanuts out of your hand. I’ve fed them that way myself, about 30 years ago. Then I heard about a bubonic plague scare in the Tahoe area that was going around back then. Never again!

Wouldn’t it be better for everyone if they just posted signs saying “Don’t pet or kiss the chipmunks” ?
There are a number of Bubonic plague hotspots globally. The biggest hotspot is Madagascar and there are some spots around four corners area from what I understand, and Dakota/Montana region along western regions not unlike Tahoe.
Bubonic plague is only a co-morbidity.
We even have pneumonic plague I. The country too, a.ong with a host of other rally nasty crap like Hanta virus (sp?), of course Lyme disease along with a host of companion nasties that can accompany the infected ticks,
Fortunately they are extremely rare. But every now and again you hear of folks who get it. Some dude in ny area got it sleeping in a double wall lean-to, mice had a nest between the wall and his moving around stirred up the hanta virus, and he died. Another fella smashed a mouse in his house and got it and died I guess.
Out west some fella caught a fox trapping or hunting, can’t remember now, threw it n the back seat, took the fox out, lent the car to a friend, and both came down with bubonic plague. That hapend about a decade or so ago, haven’t heard any cases since then, but I don’t keep,up on it, so who knows how many cases there were. But I’m sure there haven been many, as it would make the news if there were.
