Simone Biles, the superstar gymnast from the U.S., will not participate in the individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Games and will instead focus on her mental well-being, USA Gymnastics said in a statement early Wednesday.
The decision comes a day after she pulled out of the team all-around competition.
Jade Carey, who finished ninth in qualifying, will take Biles’ place in the individual all-around competition.
"After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games," USA Gymnastics said in a statement posted on Twitter Wednesday night. "We wholeheartedly support Simone's decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many."
The statement said Biles will be evaluated daily to see if she can "participate in next week’s individual event finals."

Gator, late in his career Phelps token at a party.
Not fair to the guy to suggest it was his thing.
Thanks for the info. I was withholding judgement, since I’m aware, from personal experience, that mental illness can be a long row to hoe — can I still use that word? — but this does give me a more jaded view of her.
There have been example of great athletes who have had a close relative or friend die, then the very next day, they pull their team to victory. I guess Ms. Biles will not be one of those.
What a profile in courage! Quit before even starting. And she was hyped like no one else. She was on every magazine cover.
I used to look forward to the Olympics, now I don’t even know or care that it’s on.
She won a gold in the vault in the 2008 European Championships.
She won the gold in the 2003 World Championships for the vault.
I see that she's 46 years old, and I tip my hat to her. She's in better shape at her age than I was at any time in my life. She has been a great competitor. With that aside, her days of competing at a dominating level are gone.
I don’t believe many here understand her accomplishments, or understand how incredibly difficult what she does is. She is the best gymnast ever. If she found that she was having issues maintaining orientation during complex elements it is inherently dangerous to continue - regardless of the errors it could introduce and harm the team.
I just don’t believe I’m in a position to judge. I agree many here are being very harsh when they’ve no idea what they’re talking about.
Whatever the reason for her departure, Simone Biles will be known as the gymnast that quit her team at the Olympics.
Good at jumping and twisting, but does she have a champion’s heart.
Yep, when people cite Colin Kaepernick's NFL stats it's generally about how many times he kneeled and disrespected our servicemen or how many hours he sat the bench or how many teams didn't sign him.
(Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many.”)
Yup a role model all right... of what not to do. The time for “taking care of herself” should have been days and weeks before the competition and I think I blame her less than I do the older coaches and advisors who should have had a clue and saw this coming and held her back from competition.
That said...I’ll go with what Patton said...”Americans hate a loser..”
..........”This is the equivalent of Tom Brady quitting his team during half-time and refusing to come out and play for the second half.”..........
That’s right....she could have even lessoned her program, but to quit a team mid-way is anything but ‘courageous’.....It’s pretty awful they’re claiming this about her now.
You have a pretty strong opinion about her for someone who's "barely heard of her."
I suppose if the withdrawal had happened prior to all the political and covid woke mess that has happened in the last several years then perhaps folks’ hearts might have been more open to the young lady’s plight.
Fair or not she gets lumped in with all the other kneelers and anti American whiners of which we’ve had to contend with.
That she might have withdrawn because she wasn’t performing well and didn’t want to hurt her team-mates anymore than she was doing doesn’t seem to be the message, even if intended, that is getting out there. It might have been better to say...”Look, I’m not performing well right now as my head isn’t in the right place and I’m dragging the team down, lets get an alternate in place so that my team has a better chance at a metal.” I think more people would have understood that scenario better than how she and her coaches decided to portray the situation in the media.
lol
So it appears that the ‘act of quitting’ is praised and respected now more than actually competing and losing in this country ...how embarrassing that Quitting is now a form of “bravery” and ‘courage’.....Biles is NOT Role Model material.
People need to stop normalizing quitting. Simone Biles quit. End of story.
The fact she said she’s not having fun anymore...and reference that she really wasn’t into representing the USA... says far more than anything her coaches throw out there.
I’ve made a point to watch her along the way...it was “FUN” to see her excel......and I was proud she represented our country. ...frankly she just destroyed that for ME. What a loser she’s become in quick time....the Olympic Stage is not the place to throw in the towel as was done.

I agree. People are confusing her with Osaka, which makes their arguments invalid. What has she said or done that is woke? Osaka, plenty; this gymnast, what?
No, I don’t remember hearing about that TV commercial. I don’t watch TV, though

Sadly, it’s even been on billboards. Pure media bile that Simone willfully made. I’m guessing she didn’t train like she should have and didn’t want to spoil her image so she quit.

I’m guessing you missed the ads that Biles made with the trans guy that made reference to him performing oral sex on her.
No, but she looked no worse than any other gymnast as she practiced.
