Cleveland Indians baseball team changes name to the Guardians

The Major League Baseball team in Cleveland is changing its name to Guardians, the franchise announced Friday, dropping the controversial “Indians,” by which it had been known for more than a century.

The name Guardians is a reference to well-known Art Deco statues located on the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge, which spans the Cuyahoga River and connects downtown Cleveland to the city’s trendy Ohio City neighborhood. Those statues are known as the “Guardians of Traffic.”

Ha, Cuyahoga actually

This is where we walked
This is where we swam
Take a picture here
Take a souvenir

And Muzak filled the air
From Seneca to Cuyahoga Falls
I say hey ho, way to go Ohio

The Indians have been my team since I was in T-ball back in the 80s and the coaches took the team to the show.

I don’t remember who they played that year, but for 7 years i played ball, and every year the coaches took us all to a game.

I recall one year one of my team mates caught a foul ball. Pretty impressive to a 10 year old.

I recall another year the Indians were playing the A’s and an A’s fan was seated in front of us, cheering away. I stomped on a packet of mustard with no thought as to where the mustard would go. Ended up on the back of his legs and he said What just happened?! and looked... and moved seats.

Another year, i lost my hat when i stuck my head out the window of the car when we were driving up there from Akron.

One year, we got to parade around the track and meet some of the players.

I recall seeing some great players at some of these games. Players that inevitably moved to other clubs because the ownership at the time didn’t want to pay to keep them. This was during the era of Municipal Stadium, where there were places that the toilets leaked down onto the seats. Not a fan of that park, but the atmosphere of being at a big league game was phenomenal for a kid.

And another year, we attended a baseball camp where mike hargrove was one of the speakers and then we attended a game afterwards.

As an adult, I would put the game on in the background when I was working on my computer and when something would happen I would look over and watch the plays.

I haven’t been to a game in 2-3 years, which is odd for me, but having kids makes it hard to get away. Other priorities.

I won’t dignify the name change with my presence or attention. Once the Indians are no longer the Indians, the team is dead to me. And really, the social justice bullshit just makes it easier to let it go.

It is definitely a sad thing to see a sport that has for numerous generations brought people together, become part of the divisiveness that has seeped into our nation so thoroughly.

I guess that all i can really say is that the nostalgia of better times will always be there. Maybe someday, if we can remember it and keep it in our hearts it will return.

“They’ve been trying to destroy sports for decades.”

And with me, they’ve succeeded.

Spring training used to pull me out of my winter blues, even NFL preseason games got my full attention, followed up with Sunday afternoons and evenings being off-limits to any activity other than watching football.

Now, I couldn’t care less.

I’m into my second year of no MLB baseball, and didn’t watch a single NFL play last year.

And the NBA? Are you kidding me?

I wouldn’t bother posting this if it weren’t for my firm belief that I have a lot of company.

I know exactly what you mean. I grew up in rural Arkansas and we listened to Cardinal games all the time. Lived in St. Louis for 20 years and got to celebrate their recent championships...but I just can’t stand to listen or watch since they went woke last year.

Yep, nobody ever asked real Native Americans what they think of all this.

The real pandemic is one of fatal cowardice throughout professional sports ... the owners, the players, the sportscasters ... most of them afraid of just about everything (the communist chinese cooties; the racist/terrorist organizations of antifa and negro lives matter and, especially, the Left)

They look like idols in the picture.

One other thought. Don’t you only need guardians if your parents are dead?

As you can see from the pic, Cleveland is so proud of those Guardians that they haven’t cleaned them in decades.

Gots to use the tax money for grift and corruption, after all.

I feel it too. And in my case, I haven't cared much for pro sports anyway. Even before the ultra wokeism I always thought that when athletes turned pro they got too self-aggrandizing and such. Plus, there's the fact that I live in Alabama where college football is 2nd only to God.

What us Alabamians did when Saban (Bama's coach) did the BLM thing temporarily is boo him and turned off the telly. We lit up the message boards and sports talk shows about how he's turning away lifelong Bama fans and that we're unapologetic that All Lives Matter, not just black ones and we're not going to fill up the 100K+ stadium to cheer on a bunch of people who blame whites for everything under the sun. Even last year with Bama winning the natty viewership was down because a lot and Bama fans weren't as enthusiastic as in prior years.

If you'll notice he took the hint, he came off his BLM high horse, and what little he mentions it since he'll use phrases like "black lives matter because all lives matter".

Reminds me of the Guardian Angels, the 1980s NYC Black vigilante group. Are they still active?

After their self-emasculation they should’ve considered calling themselves the Cleveland Meter Maids instead. Guardians is way too macho.
