Sen. Ted Cruz hadn’t been an official contender for the presidency of the United States for 12 hours before the questions started coming, even in the warm and welcoming cradle of a primetime interview before what should be the friendliest of conservative audiences.
“You were born in Calgary, in Canada,” FOX News host Sean Hannity asked him, glancing into the camera for an apologetic chuckle. “Is there a birth certificate issue?”
It’s a question that’s lurked around the edges of Cruz’s political profile ever since the junior senator gained enough notoriety to be mentioned as a presidential candidate. Google searches for “Ted Cruz Canadian” spiked in October 2013 as he led Republicans towards a government shutdown; the query jumped again on Monday as he announced his White House run.
And some of it is friendly fire. Donald Trump, famed skeptic of prominent pols’ citizenship paperwork, didn’t resist the urge to tweak his fellow Republican on Monday night when making his own appearance on FOX’s primetime programming.
“I hope he knows what he's doing, but I thought you had to be born in the country,” he suggested to interviewer Megyn Kelly, adding that Cruz has “one extra level of complication” because of how long he maintained dual citizenship with both the United States and our kindly neighbors to the north.
Cruz is far from the first – or even the second – White House wannabe whose birthplace has launched quizzical headlines about his fitness to inhabit the White House. Even before the Obama “birther” movement, John McCain’s eligibility was questioned because he was born on a military base in the Panama Canal Zone.
Similar queries were made of Gov. George Romney (dad of Mitt and presidential contender in 1968), who was born in Mexico to U.S. citizen parents.

The same goes for Sen. Barry Goldwater, the GOP’s nominee in 1964, who was born in Arizona. The problem? Arizona wasn’t a state yet.
There’s no shortage of historical and scholarly thought on the presidential eligibility of a U.S. citizen board abroad (And Harvard Law graduate Cruz has likely read most of it.)
But here’s the bottom line: Courts, based on long-standing precedent derived from as far back as English common law and the First Congress, would be all but certain to say that Cruz, as the son of an American mother, qualifies as a “natural born citizen” eligible to serve as the commander-in-chief.
In other words, experts say: as long as you have one parent who’s an American citizen – no matter where you’re born – you’re a “natural born citizen,” one of the qualifications under the Constitution to serve as president.
Why are we revisting this yet again? Must be a slow night to be digging up articles from 2015…
What’s the point?
Every time Ted Cruz is in the news here I have to hear from people that he is not a natural born citizen.
Happens every day and just a little while ago.
I am tired of this crap. If Kamala Harris is eligible to serve and is already VP so can Ted Cruz.
I’m not trolling.
The people trolling every Ted Cruz thread saying he is not eligible are the trolls!
See here in my excellent Ted Cruz turning point speech post.......

Unobjectionable truth like natural born citizens are naturally citizens because they are born here of citizen parents and have only ONE allegiance, ONE loyalty, and ONE nationality?

The Ted is not a NBC is so tiresome and they never show any proof that he is not a NBC.
Cruz was able to show that his parents had no intents on being anything else other than America. They were in Canada on assignment, not because they wanted to be Canadians.
Unless Ted Cruz is running for President. Who cares?
I care. The people who write not eligible, Ted is not a NBC every time Ted Cruz is mentioned on this website are annoying as hell.
That leaves out Kamala, who had ZERO American parents at the time of her birth.
/laughs in Kenyan
Again ask yourself what is the purpose of the NBC clause and does allowing a person with duel citizenship who by definition may be equally loyal to another country serve that purpose?
Interesting to see NBC News shilling for Ted Cruz. Either they have something on him, or they see him as an easy mark for defeat...or probably both.
Aaron Burr had duel citizenship.
1) The constitution doesn’t say but the framer’s understanding combined with the statutes enacted from the first Congress indicate that the phrase means both birthed abroad to American parents and birthed in the territory regardless of their parent’s citizenship. The Supreme Court has confirmed that definition on multiple occasions in various contexts.
2) So the one remaining question remains is if Cruz was a citizen at birth. And that’s an easy one. The Nationality Act of 1940 outlines which citizens became nationals and citizens at birth. Citizenship goes to the baby of one American parent who has spend a certain number of years here. Someone must have a single parent who has resided in the US for at least 10 years including 5 after the age of 14 in order to be considered a natural born citizen. Cruz’s mother was born in Delaware. Is Delaware part of America? I think so.
3) With the 1790 Naturalization Act - Cruz would also qualify and there were a lot of Founders involved in that act.
So can we cut it out? No. People don’t want to cut it out. They want to keep it up posting some crap on my posts or somebody else’s: Don’t you read the constitution? YES. It says natural born citizen! Yes. Well look at it. I did read it. It says natural born citizen. He’s born of an American mother. Yeah, well it doesn’t mean that. Well, what does it mean? Hey, haven’t you read the book by Coo-Coo Clock over here. Enough already.

The law is that both parents have to be citizens and it doesn’t matter where you were born. We are a blood country, not a land country.
He needs to stay in the Senate or accept a nomination to the Supreme Court by President Trump, the currently elected, former and NEXT President.
Did you read that part of the constitution where it says president must be born on American soil and have two citizen parents? Quit being so dogmatic, you don’t know as much about anything as you think you do.
