Poll: Two-Thirds of Southern Republicans Want to Secede

A new YouGov-BrightlineWatch poll that was released this month found that Americans are so divided among ideological lines that a solid majority of Republicans in the South want their states to secede from the Union.

The survey laid out a bunch of hypothetical scenarios in which the United States is carved out into smaller regional powers consisting of a handful of states:

(See groupings at link)

In order to accomplish this, states would have to secede from the Union and form geographical alliances. And while this desire was substantially more prevalent than in states located south of the Mason-Dixon Line – also known as the former Confederacy – a shocking percentage of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans from every proposed bloc of states said that they would support secession.

“Yet rather than support for secession diminishing over the past six months, as we expected, it rose in every region and among nearly every partisan group. The jump is most dramatic where support was already highest (and has the greatest historical precedent) — among Republicans in the South, where secession support leaped from 50% in January/February to 66% in June. Support among Republicans in the Mountain region increased as well, by 7 points, from 36% to 43%. Among Democrats in the West, a near-majority of 47% (up 6 points) supports a schism, as do 39% (up 5 points) in the Northeast. Support jumped 9 points among independents in the Heartland as well, reaching 43%. Even subordinate partisan groups appear to find secession more appealing now than they did last winter, …

In 2017 California Democrats were trying to get the state to secede because “Trump!”

It makes me wonder what would happen if states wanted to secede?

Yes we know our history, and our union was kept together as a result of the Civil War.

But, what if states started seceding nowadays? Would the President send the military to keep states in the union nowadays?

Suppose a state legislature and/or a vote of the people in some state, voted to leave the union? What would the reaction from those in power in Washington, DC be?

I find it hard to believe that events would occur as happened during Civil War times. Would we have a draft and send our draftee armies into states which seceded, and march to the sea to cripple such states, and force them to remain in the union? Would states which seceded themselves raise armies to fight back?

As a southern Republican, I prefer purging the progressive City States from the Union.

Go to war and slay the progressives and kick them out of the union

I would wait till the mid-terms and 2024.
The GOP will likely have control of Congress and DJT may be back at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Would the Articles of Confederation work under this type of agreement?

A better method might just be to throw up a blockade around the DC beltway and other feral urban centers and allow the limited number of decent folks to escape.

We’ve always said ‘the south will rise again’.

We never gave a timeframe.

What would the reaction from those in power in Washington, DC be?

Better worry about what would the reaction from the people of the state be. Unlike 1860 when secession was broadly popular with the people in the southern states, states that secede today would have between 40 and 49 percent of the people opposing it. Leave and close to half your population would be angry about the acts of secession. How do you set up a new country with so little support?

The main problem with that is that we’d be stuck with the debt they ran up.

The South has risen already.

That is the root of the problem

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Debt is irrelevant when restoring America

The bare minimum. I could see a lot of split states. I left out UT because they're wacky and left out Iowa because it's the place where national politicians are made which creeps me out. NM sucks so AZ is kinda screwed. Alaska if iffy and detached so they would have a decision to make. Ohio would need to get their act together. Indiana? Only thing I know about that state is that John Melancamp comes from there.

Excellent question.

Related to that, I’ve wondered if one could retain American citizenship if you live in a state which seceded, but you opposed it?

Would you be allowed to remain an American citizen, even if you kept living in the state which seceded?

Yes...the commie/socialist yankees need to self-cancel like their forefathers did and leave everyone else alone. I lived in Europe for 15 years total and those people HATE each other. Germans/French/English...you name it! My ex-is Bavarian and NEVER did she or any of her family consider going to Prague, which was a 2 hour drive down the Autobahn and one of the top 5 cities in the world. I lived in Germany by the Rhine for 6 years and can count on 2 hands the times I saw cars from France driving in Germany.

That would be like living in Philly and never seeing anyone from Joisey in your life (and never going there).

Normals have to get real and divide the OCD freaks from normal human beings!

They can have DC (Please take it) and the rest of those pretentious $hitholes. The rats can have NYC, historic home to the Rosenbergs!

Yes it is time. Washington should have no say in the governance of autonomous regions.
