California Reconsiders Math 'Social Justice' Curriculum Overhaul Following Opposition

The California Board of Education is set to postpone implementing a proposed overhaul of its mathematics curriculum during a Wednesday meeting after opponents argued the plan could harm students by needlessly inserting politics and social justice initiatives into lessons, Fox News reported on Tuesday.

The board apparently intends to delay a final decision on the curriculum to next May.

"California is on the verge of politicizing K-12 math in a potentially disastrous way,” Dr. Williamson M. Evers, a senior fellow of the Independent Institute, said in a statement. “This postponement means the State Board of Education has heard the message loud and clear. STEM leaders don’t want California students left behind by introducing politics into the math curriculum.”

The board’s reconsideration of the initiative comes after hundreds of former and current experts working in science, math, and engineering, as well as others fields, signed an open letter that criticized the plan.

"For all the rhetoric in this framework about equity, social justice, environmental care and culturally appropriate pedagogy, there is no realistic hope for a more fair, just, equal and well-stewarded society if our schools uproot long-proven, reliable and highly effective math methods and instead try to build a mathless Brave New World on a foundation of unsound ideology," the letter reads.

According to drafts of the framework, the new curriculum would focus on equity to recognize "that mathematics, over the years, has developed in a way that has excluded many students," adding that because of inequities, "teachers need to work consciously to counter racialized or gendered ideas about mathematics achievement."

"All students deserve powerful mathematics; we reject ideas of natural gifts and talents," according to a bullet point in the framework. "The belief that 'I treat everyone the same' is insufficient: Active efforts in mathematics teaching are required

I wonder what they'll slip in instead.

The intent is to dumb down the bright (normal) kids that make consistently underperforming Black kids look bad.

Your kids are being abused and even punished for striving for excellence.

Union teachers do not care a whit about your children.

Get away from the public schools where they teach that merit is bad.

“Reconsider” is a nice way of saying, “Okay, we’ve heard your arguments. Now here’s our middle finger!”.

If Ja’quellen has 2 babies with Romando, 1 baby with Da’ronde and 1 baby with Tajae, please separately calculate total monthly TANF and WIC payments she is entitled to.

For extra credit, calculate the medicaid income cut-off

The notion that demanding correct answers is somehow racist was the straw that broke this aging, decrepit camel’s back, and high time, too. Anyway, how can you steal an election if you can’t add?

Higher math is not really needed by most folks.

If you can handle basic arithmetic and really basic algebra..
i.e. long division, percentages and simple linear equations it’s all good. (514/3.127) (12% of 32 =?) (5x -7 = 105) and so on...in a 4 year HS curriculum these simple math skills can be learned by nearly anyone...

But there should always be higher-level math courses avail for those who like math or those who plan on going into a tech field..

algebra2
geometry
trigonometry
calculus 1

“that mathematics, over the years, has developed in a way that has excluded many students,”

Yeah. It has excluded the students who, for whatever reason, can’t get the right answer. Or those who never even bother to attempt the problem.

“Reconsider” is a nice way of saying: Uh, oh. They lifted the rock and the light-of-day is shining in on us. Let’s try this again when no one is looking.

“All students deserve powerful mathematics; we reject ideas of natural gifts and talents,”

That is such a nonsensical statement on so many levels. And, of course, it does not apply to sports.

Math is the most objective of subjects. Regardless of race, religion, political beliefs or economic status, get the answers right and you get a good grade. The real agenda here is to conceal from parents and voters the abject failure of Teacher Union schools to teach math.

Only an scumbag would use and apolitical subject like math instruction for children to l propaganda is little children instead of teaching the math. This is crap that countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, and China do and those horrible countries should not be emulated.

No, it's not. If we were still willing to start tracking about fourth grade, most of the problem would disappear. We went off the rails when the "everybody needs to go to college" thing got loose, and when the race police with pigment meters decided that every classroom had to look like every other classroom.

Remember that the math now taught is the “new math” introduced in schools in the ‘60’s (and opposed by my father, a mathematician).

Union teachers aren’t teaching that merit is bad for the benefit of black children. A merit based economy is the last thing a govt teacher, or any govt “employee”, wants. They are doing it to defend their own rice bowls.

OMG with these people. 2+2=4, etc. is A LAW OF THE UNIVERSE, it is not a concept or a construct or whatever else these morons think. All of math is about getting the right answer. Now, if you can’t do that, even if you try hard, well that is OK too. It doesn’t make you less of a person. It does mean you can’t be a doctor, or an engineer, or an accountant. But look, you can still be a lawyer and many other worthy professions.

I myself can’t do math well enough to do any of those jobs.

And you know what these white liberals are thinking - I’ll get my child a math tutor, my little Johnny or Sally will be fine.

But what if you’re some poor person (OF COLOR!) whose kid is great at math, but you could never afford a tutor. What about those kids? I’m sure there are SOME minority children in these classes now. To the Dems, et al. those kids are chopped liver. Their lives don’t matter because their lives don’t advance the “narrative” of oppression that is being used in an attempt to oppress ALL OF US.
