Putin sees himself as the right man at the right time. This means he’s more likely to take serious action while he can instead of patiently waiting for the perfect circumstance.
If he wants to invade Ukraine he will do so. Period.
If he wants to invade the Baltics I believe he will wait until a very cold winter and then launch a massive winter exercise which will pivot to an invasion. Russian troops and Russian gear will have a significant advantage in this environment and NATO will not. The invasion will likely begin and end quite rapidly. Maybe two or three days.

Putin is fearful of China, but he doesn’t see the US or NATO helping him against them, so he tries to do what he can with the Chinese to keep the wolves at bay.

I suspect no matter what, Stalin was always going to get Poland one way or the other. And the one difference also is, Stalin was just doing it to buy time, because he wouldn't be ready to attack the West until 1943, according to his estimation. But he would have made a deal with the West and potentially blocked Hitler, if the West let him have Poland. One of the big "What Ifs" of the war.
