US military guns keep vanishing, some used in street crimes.

In the first public accounting of its kind in decades, an Associated Press investigation has found that at least 1,900 U.S. military firearms were lost or stolen during the 2010s, with some resurfacing in violent crimes. And that's certainly an undercount. Government records covering the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force show pistols, machine guns, shotguns and automatic assault rifles have vanished from armories, supply warehouses, Navy warships and elsewhere. These weapons of war disappeared because of security failures that, until now, have not been publicly reported, including sleeping troops and a surveillance system that didn’t record.

Had a Marine go to brig on mainland Japan for selling excess .45 rounds to undercover Japanese NIS agent. I know the details because I was called to testify. I was a classified materials escort and brought two magazines of .45 rounds in with a M1911. They belonged to an armory Stateside. They shipped the pistol back, but not the rounds. The rounds were no longer in the inventory. At that time ammo was worth a lot to the Yakuza.

Similar stuff happened a during Iraqi freedom with weapons and ammo. During post deployment the inventories came up short. People injured or killed I assume. Their weapons ended up somewhere. I was under the impression the weapons were written off as destroyed or turned over to deploying units. Who knows where those weapons ended up after 2009. I wonder how many of those weapons ultimately found their way back to the States via black markets.

I’ve been retired for a while, but even back then, the crooks had better rifles and pistols than we did.

They really wanted night vision and guided missiles.

>>>American citizens own 300 million guns, including 20 million assault rifles<<<

There are 20 Million Select Fire Rifles owned by American Citizens? I did not know that.

Green Card Holders can also purchase Firearms, so Commiela’s Parents might even own some.

I was ADA, Chaparral/Vulcan in Germany with 6/56 ADA "Night Hides Not". Great assignment, air base defense for 3 NATO air bases. First two years at Hahn, last 2 at Spangdahlem. Other base was at Bitburg.

Went back to Fort Bliss for 4 more years...8 years active was enough for me. At that time, promotion to major was about 60%, and I wasn't Regular Army or a minority...not an excuse, just reality. I was about two years away from getting married, and those plans would have been derailed by a looming assignment in Korea.

“American citizens own 300 million guns, including 20 million assault rifles.”

AR-15s are Not Assault Rifles. Please stop the use of Rat talking points.

The AR-15 is not equal to the M-4 Carbine,M-16 in any of its variants unless the owner went out and converted it illegally.

The Rats call the AR-15 an Assault rifle to scare the public into supporting the abolition of the Second Amendment and all firearms.

1900+/- firearms in a 10+ year period? - thats nothing

Exactly and I didn't see in the story any differentiation between combat losses and losses due to bookkeeping errors or theft.

Thank you for your service.

I always thought ADA was the most interesting branch.

Vulcan and Chaparral were impressive.

I like the Air Force, but they were always trying to dismiss ADA.

Then, when you needed them, they were too busy.

LOL, it was interesting being a butterbar on an AF base. Our abilities were undervalued by AF rank and file, but my battery was usually good for a full point on base survivability during tac evals.

During alerts, you'd find me in the Wing CP. I was one of two officers in my unit with a TS clearance, the BC was the other.

One of the few highlights of an otherwise undistinguished military career (lol) was my first tac eval. I was briefing the wing commander on our positions when an NBC alert was dropped. IIRC, it was a Soman attack on Ramstein. The Wing Disaster Preparedness Officer, a Captain, was called up to the Eagles Nest. His immediate reaction was "Alarm Red", full mask and protective gear.

I was incredulous. Before the Wing Cdr could say anything, I blurted out, "Colonel, may I make a recommendation?" The silence was thunderous, you can imagine the reaction by 5 AF Colonels to an Army 2nd LT, lol.

I said, "Colonel, I recommend Alarm Yellow for these 3 reasons:

1. Ramstein is 65 miles southeast, and the winds are westerly.

2. Soman is a nonpersistent nerve agent.

3. It's raining like hell outside, rendering the agent useless.

Wing Cdr said, "I like that, let's go Alarm Yellow." As he said that, I saw the NATO team chief nodding his head.

15 minutes later, I heard the Wing Cdr's voice boom out, "as long as I'm in command, anytime there's an NBC input, I want that Army Lieutenant up here." So it went for the next 18 months.

It was a piece of cake, NBC Officer was one of my extra duties. It was my ticket to Battalion HQ, when rumors were flying that Department of the Army was going to inspect battalions in Europe for their NBC Warfare programs. Also earned me a week in Oberammergau at the NATO NBC Officers Refresher course. It was awesome!

Our military has been infiltrated for 15-20 years, and it’s getting worse.

As far as I know, “pistols” aren’t even issued in any branch of the military anymore. I am sure they meant “handguns”.

Do you know what the ‘AR’ in AR-15 means?
(hint: it’s NOT “assault rifle”)
