That gives me chills. “the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard.”

Sounds like a tablet/iPad to me.

How could Orwell have been so prescient?

I have a pair of 8W Baofeng UV- 82 which is the same radio with different interface. I like the two channel toggle. Unfortunately, I could never get the programming software/cord to work.

I just bought a County Com GP-5 SSB. I couldn’t see myself dropping a grand on an HF radio and antenna.

There is nothing funny about, and it has been and continues to go on in EVERYONE’S home, etc. 24/7.

Don’t buy the evil things to begin with, and if you finally smartened up after the MISTAKE of buying them, etc. TOTALLY DESTROY them, etc.

You can’t turn it off, etc. That is just BS lies they tell people to placate them, make them falsely believe they have any control over electronics, tech., etc.

You are VERY GULLIBLE since you believe they will actually opt you out, turn it off, not access it, etc.

Let me tell you why I have Amazon Alexa devices in my home. It's quite simple really. I'm an empty nester. In the event I fall and cannot get up, I'll be damn'ed if I press a "Life Alert" button.

I have my Alexa devices setup to connect directly to 9-11 and send my address so help comes. I have a routine setup that when my Alexa's dial 9-11 the smart lock on my front door unlocks for the Emergency Responders so they don't have to break my front door down to get me. (That's something Life Alert cannot do!)

If Alexa is eavesdropping on me (and I've no doubt it is) it either hears complete silence occasionally broken by my heavy fingers on my mechanical keyboard, or it hears the music I'm playing and is somehow finding that valuable information to collect.

There's not a lot of middle-ground here for Alexa to snoop on me and collect data. I'm well versed in what Alexa collects and how it does it thanks to the packet sniffing I've done on my home network and I'm willing to take the "risk" of it eavesdropping on me. In my use case as an emergency 9-11 service for when I do not have my cellphone on me to dial it, I actually WANT it to eavesdrop on me.

That may just be cookies or some other form of locally cached info causing that.

Criminal activity caught on Ring doorbells:

At the very least, some of the porch pirates left without stealing anything because the homeowner, home or not, was able to warn them to leave.

Surveillance cameras aren’t “stupid”. What’s wrong is not the camera itself but that people unauthorized and unknown by the cameras’ owners have access

Had mesh networking been built into every wireless router, sharing a mere 1% or so of bandwidth, paying for ISPs would be generally moot.

What is a doorbell?

What is a neighbor?

This thread is very confusing for this country boy...

Now if Alexa gets connected to auto horns, then we have a problem...

;-)

Outside of the wife and phone there’s nothing in our home you can talk too. Computer microphones and cameras are dis-abled. Cortana is disabled. Smart phones both have voice activation and locations disabled. No Alexa, no echo or ring crap.

It’s your PC.

You can disable your microphone, but then you can’t do group meetings on Teams, etc., which is a problem if you have to work from home occasionally.

900 Mhz, not Ghz. 1000:1 ratio. 900 MHz radio is very common.
