Federal officials have recovered millions of dollars in bitcoin (BTC, -0.58%) that Colonial Pipeline paid to a criminal outfit during a ransomware attack, the Department of Justice announced Monday.
Colonial Pipeline paid about $4.4 million in bitcoin to the attackers, linked to the Darkside ransomware group, after its payment systems were frozen last month. The company had to halt fuel transportation across the East Coast of the U.S., sparking fears of a gas shortage in a dozen states.
“The Department of Justice has found and recovered the majority of the ransom paid,” Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said.

And so of course, the person was arrested? Or did they just get the money and call it a day? I noticed they aren’t after a fugitive.
It’s fake. They are lying for what they consider laudable reasons. This is the Glomar Explorer, looking for manganese nodules on the ocean floor.
“Of course, a year ago, we were paying $1.62 under President Trump.”
The lowest I ever it here was $1.89 back in Dec 2018. That’s when we moved here from Cape Cod and NJ
I don’t believe this, they just aren’t that smart. And I heard Colonial may have paid as much as $90 Million, now that is Hans Gruber kind of money.
And what about the Chinese sending in Fentynal.
Sheesh! If a hacker can’t count on Bitcoin to be anonymous, how the hell will be get paid?
So they get the money back without identifying the perpetators?
Why do I find that hard to believe?
will be > will he
This x100…
I’m sure the Big Guy is okay. But in any case, this is good news. If it can be gotten that way, it can usually be recovered that way, and I’m glad to see that our agencies actually had the smarts to be able to do it.
I’ve lost faith in the whole bunch, not that I ever had much for a collection of agencies that missed 9/11. And that was even though it was pretty publicly planned and they had received information from US persons, ranging from landlords to bank personnel, who’d dealt with the nutcases involved.
They look like aged, politically motivated Keystone Kops who seem to have been totally unaware of the possibilities of the very modern crime of ransomware (although I read that 80 companies have been similarly extorted - and paid up - in the last year or so).
Maybe the publicity on this attack actually made them get their backsides in gear, stop looking for ways to persecute Trump and Republicans, and actually do their job.
“...Hackers such as these need to be found and summarily executed. on the spot....”
Agree, but it’s pretty hard to execute FIB/CIA people.
As long as the “Big Guy” got his 10% cut, all is good otherwise...nothing to see here now.
This is the U.S. govt. telling us this. As far as we know, it could be a lie just to take down Bitcoin.
Yes, that’s how much I trust those thieving bastards.
might make a certain nightly you tube channel very interesting tonight.
It’s been a month or more since the ransom was paid.
Bitcoin must be difficult to convert to other assets.
“A Majority” would be anything over $2.2 M.
It’s all explained here:

The idiots at the pipeline should be heavily fined for negotiating with cyber terrorists. Especially when they didn’t have to in order to get back up and running.
I just now swapped my alt coin to Tether which is ‘tethered’ to the USD aka a stable coin. All other alt coins go up and down in the same pattern as Bitcoin and this is gonna tank Bitcoin for a little while. Wish I’d seen this news earlier. Lost ten bucks since this morning.
I only have a tiny bit of crypto. Started with $250, pulled $300 in USD back to my bank a while back and the rest has been bouncing around at 90 +- 30. I’m at 88 right now but it was 98 this morning.
It’s free money at this point so I’m just playing. I don’t have the time too keep up with crypto news or the money to make or lose a lot and if I did, I’d probably do stocks instead.
I had that thought too. Precursor to fedgov creating an official crypto. But their algorithms and apps will track everything.(including your jabs record)
just a blurb on Fox - 64 bitcoins, worth (if I heard right) 3.4M . Seems a bit short for a ‘the majority of the ransom’ claim if the ransom was 4.4.
looks like the big guy got a bit more than 10%
