'Big risk': California farmers hit by drought change planting plans

Joe Del Bosque is leaving a third of his 2,000-acre farm near Firebaugh, California, unseeded this year due to extreme drought. Yet, he hopes to access enough water to produce a marketable melon crop.

Farmers across California say they expect to receive little water from state and federal agencies that regulate the state's reservoirs and canals, leading many to leave fields barren, plant more drought-tolerant crops or seek new income sources all-together.

"We're taking a big risk in planting crops and hoping the water gets here in time," said Del Bosque, 72.

Agriculture is an important part of California's economy and the state is a top producer of vegetables, berries, nuts and dairy products. The last major drought from 2012 to 2017 reduced irrigation supplies to farmers, forced strict household conservation measures and stoked deadly wildfires.

California farmers are allocated water from the state based on seniority and need, but farmers say water needs of cities and environmental restrictions reduce agricultural access.

The jackasses in the state leadership want to spend on the train to nowhere, yet refuse to build water desalinization plants for a minuscule of the price for the train. Recall this narcissistic, adulterous bastard. Newsome is an idiot, looking after his nest egg and does not give a DEMONRATS' ass about anyone. And your humor was inappropriate.

I don’t believe that is what the politicians are really doing. They want to make California untenable so the land can be bought up by the rich for pennies. Once California has become a dominion unto itself, suddenly policies will be reversed and nobody will care about the bait fish.

California has experienced many droughts, such as 1841, 1864, 1924, 1928–1935, 1947–1950, 1959–1960, 1976–1977, 1986–1992, 2006–2010, 2011–2017, 2018 and 2020.... which continues to this day.

This is what Noah Cross did to the San Joaquin Valley citrus farmers to steal their land for pennies on the dollar.

The Delta Smelt:

IS NOT a bait fish-—other fish won’t eat them

IS Not native to California at all

Is NOT a fish that can be used commercially.

“This is what Noah Cross did to the San Joaquin Valley citrus farmers to steal their land for pennies on the dollar.”

You must be talking about the San Fernando valley.

Noah Cross was the LA County Water Commissioner.

what gives? i thought we had a 200 year snow pack in the sierra.

oh i forgot, we’re a one party state and most of that water goes back to the ocean, to trim the sails of all those conservative rubes in the central valley.

They want to put those who can afford them in electric cars. Those can then be remotely disabled leaving people unable to freely travel.

PART of the issue is salt water intrusion up the delta from San Francisco Bay. If too much water is removed from the river upstream, the high tide cycles can push salt water way up into the delta; far enough to reach the intakes to local drinking water supply systems, which would be a disaster.
