Louisiana state troopers were captured on body camera video stunning, punching and dragging a Black man as he apologized for leading them on a high-speed chase...

> Police are supposed to be professionals. <
Agreed. And to which I’d add: Folks who are saying that the police did nothing wrong here are giving the police powers reserved for a judge and jury.
So what's the justification from the law enforcement side?
Caveat: the cops may have behaved criminally. Let the courts decide.
And yet for two years the Louisiana State Police has had this video and has done nothing about it. No investigation. No suspension. Lied about the cause of death. A whole load of nothing. The only reason this is seeing the light of day is because of the civil rights violation charges.
Then rather than beating and Tasing him to death why not just shoot him? Far more humane, don't you think?
Civil Asset Forfeiture.
You’re exactly right to fear that, and people are getting sick of it and finally addressing what should have been done 50 years ago when this “loophole” started to be exploited.
Here in my small town we got a new chief of police 2 years ago. He was STUPID enough during a city council meeting that was attended by our local newspaper to have to explain why he bought a $20k side by side with lights and custom paint job. He told them that it is perfect to use as a ticket platform in the city for parking, red light infractions, etc.
He then made the cardinal sin of actually saying “we need to drastically increase our ticket revenue to support our department, we are not getting anywhere near the money through tickets that we should here.”
He came from a big city police department and revenue generation was a key part of his thinking. He didn’t last 8 months after making that statement. I guarantee that that cop was 100% in favor of any civil asset forfeiture as a way for funding and the people here knew it, that one statement of fining them for slight infractions so he could afford expensive big city toys sunk his career here.
I know. It’s horrific when one understands it’s a minority population within a minority driving the stats.
Yay!! Another police bashing thread on FR! The place to say, declare, pontificate and convict ALL LE. 🤬
Your BLM masters must pay very well....🙄
If you’ve never been in a live-or-die situation, you can’t speak to this. You have NO idea how you’ll respond to something like this. It’s different for everyone.
Discussions here on Free Republic that involve the police often get a bit heated. I understand that. It’s a sensitive topic for many. But some posters let that get the best of them. For example:
Folks here who defend police actions are sometimes called “bootlickers”. That does nothing to help the discussion. And beyond that, it’s childish.
And folks who question police actions are sometimes called BLM stooges. That also does nothing to help the discussion. And beyond that, it’s also a bit childish.
Steve Lehto (youtube channel Lehto’s law) discusses it a lot.
The first case I ever heard of was the elderly black woman who didn’t want to pay inflated lumber prices to repair her home after a serious hurricane in Florida. She pulled $20k out of savings and drove to Texas to get good deals. On her way, at night, she passed cops that would park on the side of the highway, perpendicular to the road, shining their headlights across the road so they could see who was in the car.
They pulled her over and took her money because it was probably “drug money”.
Since then I’ve heard of much worse cases.
I always wonder if this could play out in your favor: The cop finds the money and comfiscates it. At this point you cold cock him, handcuff him and call the sheriff. You then bring charges that the cop was robbing you under color of law and use self defense as your defense. Let a jury decide.
The big challenge with civil assett forfeiture is that $10,000 isn’t what it was in the 60’s.
I’m not defending their actions. The experience of stress and combat is different for everyone. No armchair quarterbacking is going to explain the experience of these officers. None.
I think the cops in this video obviously made some mistakes for which they should be punished. But, that’s all there is to it. Leave it alone! Let’s not indict ALL COPS due to this one video. We need cops and they NEED our support.
No matter what LIBERALS want to do, there will always be cops making mistakes. Always has been always will be.
Bootlickers and Childish
Well human beings are all over the spectrum for good or bad.
Life goes on be they bootlickers, childish, or idiots.
My understanding was a fed investigation had been undertaken, and the state was cooperating. Also did you see one of the cops was told he would be fired? Seems as though something was done...
“Getting out of the car and apologizing doesn’t make you immune from getting your ass handed to you.”
The job of the Police is to apprehend criminal suspects. It is not to mete out justice.
Apprehension is a broad brush. Someone fleeing from LE should not be assumed to be easy to apprehend. The apology could’ve very easily been a feint.
There is no doubt whatsoever that the stress that police under go is infinitely worse than what average citizens go through. A lot of responsibility is given to them, including the responsibility to take another life if necessary. I return we expect them to be able to control their actions and act within the guidelines they are trained in. Beating and tasing an unarmed suspect to death, regardless what they did, is not acceptable. Under any circumstances.
Was he fired?
Counterpoint: they were trained to use blunt force and Tasers in response to an immediate threat and exercised that training. They could’ve pulled their service weapons and opened fire, but they didn’t.
Again, I am NOT defending their actions. I’m simply pointing out that trying to understand their mental state is impossible. Combat awareness is self-preservation.
