Sgt. Betsy Smith, spokesperson for the National Police Association, said that the American public deserves to know more about the fatal shooting of U.S. Air Force veteran Ashley Babbitt during the Jan. 6 Capitol breach.
Smith believes that the continued politicization of police has to be addressed, adding that Babbitt did wrong in being part of the group entering the Capitol, but the message the law system is sending infers a double standard.
“One of the most disturbing things is the complete lack of curiosity by the legacy media. They don’t seem to really care why Ashley Babbitt was killed,” Smith told NTD’s “The Nation Speaks” program.
“They don’t seem to care. They’re so concerned about police tactics and why we do what we do until it comes to Ashley Babbitt, an unarmed woman shot and killed by law enforcement. I think the American public deserves to know and we need to have that discussion.”
Babbitt was together with a group that had stormed inside the Capitol building on Jan. 6. A witness to the event said that police were asking people to get back and out of the way from a door that had its windows smashed. Ashli didn’t heed the call and as she tried to climb through, an African-American police officer wearing a suit fatally shot her in the neck area.
Smith said that she thinks, based on footage taken during the incident, that the situation was very confusing.
“You see police officers, some of them in riot gear that are kind of behind Ashley Babbitt. And some of them are walking down the stairs, they’re kind of getting out of the way. And that is very confusing to me as a police officer as to what was happening there,” she said.
The Department of Justice announced on April 14 that the man who killed Babbitt will not be charged.
“Officials examined video footage posted on social media, statements from the officer involved and other officers and witnesses to the events, physical evidence from the scene of the shooting, and the results of an autopsy,” the DOJ said in a statement.
“Based on that investigation, officials determined that there is insufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution.”
Smith said that that this could be sending a message to the citizens that:
“Well, if you are protecting our wealthy politicians at the United States Capitol, you have different rules of engagement than you do if you’re trying to protect a small town or an urban area, and I find that very dangerous.”
“The American public deserves to know the details of why deadly force was deployed, because there are very strict rules when we use deadly force,” Smith said.
“Had Ashley Babbitt been a liberal activist protesting abortion or perhaps protesting Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation at the Supreme Court, we might be dealing with a very different issue,” Smith asserted, “and that is not how the American justice system operates.”
“We also deserve to know that officer’s name, there was really no reason to know the name of the officer that shot Daunte Wright. But yet it was released. And now she (the officer) has had to flee her home.”
The Epoch Times reached out to the DOJ and U.S. Capitol Police for comment.

Try the same situation with a white cop and a black woman climbing through the window.
The sergeant just wants the nutbag gone from his cul-de-sac neighborhood, and one of his jerk neighbors dumps the video out where social media and the Democrat Media can seize it and use it against him.
So, he has a Buy Large Mansions mob show up at his house and he gets chased out, like the woman officer in the Daunte Wright case.
THEN we find out that the nutbag drifter actually IS a bowl of Loops short of a full Fruit, and that he's up on priors - including torturing animals.
Of course, the Media and the mob couldn't give a crap about that - they have their new White voodoo doll, the sergeant.
In hindsight, the new way to handle these kinds of situations would have been for the sergeant to just follow him home, alerting some family and friends what he [the Sgt] was up to.
Once you have the information, then you can plan for the future.
But keep your mouth shut and don't do anything on camera.
