In Pittsburgh on Wednesday, the president unveiled his new $2.5 trillion "infrastructure" plan which, as Katie explained, has little to do with physical infrastructure at all. Most of the money is reportedly saved to fight climate change and social justice projects.
And Amtrak wants in. Amtrak, President Biden's famously favorite mode of transportation, is now seeking to take advantage of the president's new infrastructure spending. They are asking for Congress to pave the way to help them carry 52 million passengers a year by 2035. They also released their proposed map, which includes new routes to their schedules. Some rather long routes.

It might not be high speed rail but at least it’s Amtrak.

The problem is that there are a lot of Dagney Taggarts that still haven’t bugged out. They actually think we can fix this and just “roll with the rule changes”.
I passed that point before Trump was elected. That’s why I call my hobby farm “Galt’s Plateau”.

In case you missed it in the press release:
‘Millions of people, including large populations of people of color, do not have access to a reliable, fast, sustainable, and affordable passenger rail option. This is neither fair nor equitable.’
Srsly. They actually printed that. Based on the map presented, looks like you’re gonna need another million miles of trak.

How do I get to Boise or Sioux Falls?
My grandfather was an engineer on the Union Pacific. When he retired, he and my grandmother got life-time passes on the railroad. Trains stopped right in his town of Glenns Ferry, Idaho. They could go pretty much anywhere east of the Mississippi.
At the end, with most passenger routes eliminated, they got Greyhound passes as compensation.

Passenger rail will always be the slowest way to travel until the rail line owns it’s own routes. Amtrack leases time from freight lines and receives last priority on these tracks.
