David McGee, an attorney with Beggs & Lane, is the man the Florida Republican named during an appearance Tuesday evening on Tucker Carlson's Fox News show in which he responded to reports that he is under federal investigation over a former relationship.
McGee served for six years as the first assistant at the U.S. Attorney’s Office and for seven years as the lead attorney for a Justice Department's Organized Crime Task Force, according to his biography on the website of his law firm, which is based in Pensacola, Florida.

The New York Times reported Gaetz, 38, is being looked at as part of a broader investigation into local Florida official Joel Greenberg, a political ally who was indicted last summer on an array of charges, including sex trafficking of a minor and financially supporting people in exchange for sex, at least one of whom was an underage girl.
Investigators are said to be examining whether Gaetz had a sexual relationship two years ago with a girl believed to have been 17 at the time and paid her to travel with him. Specifically authorities are trying to determine whether he violated federal sex trafficking laws.
Gaetz told Carlson that the FBI, alongside the Department of Justice, had his father wear a wire to eavesdrop on conversations between him and McGee, who the lawmaker alleged was trying to receive $25 million in exchange for making the allegations disappear. The Florida Republican said his father was set to catch McGee on Wednesday in the act demanding "4.5 million" as a "down payment" on the "bribe," adding further that the New York Times leak hampered the investigation.

People get so passionately invested in political personalities - left and right - it often times gives them unhealthy blinders. As someone who has had the misfortune of working in DC and spending too much time on The Hill, I’m NEVER shocked when I hear salacious stories of sexual misconduct committed by politicians. Why? They’re a horrible, entitled and unbelievably egotistical lot.
The only thing wrong with the show ‘House of Cards’ is it wasn’t debased enough. These people are freaks.
I think when a story like this breaks the best way to evaluate it is with caution and circumspection. Could the NY Times be lying? Yep. Could the FBI being acting out in a fit of political payback? No doubt. Could Gaetz be lying. Unfortunately, yes.
Could they all be dissembling to some degree or another? Certainly. There is no rational, logical way to reach any conclusion with the extremely limited amount of information we currently have. As Carlson said, it was one of the strangest interviews he’s ever done. Gaetz could be wholly innocent and that could still be true and accurate.

Joel Greenberg is facing sex trafficking charges related to a girl between the ages of 14 and 17 and is also accused of illegally using a state database to look up information about the girl and other people with whom he was engaged in “sugar daddy” relationships, according to an indictment filed Friday by the U.S. Attorney’s office.
All this happened on or around 2017. Greenburg is a friend of Gaetz. How close a friend? Unknown and none of the stories at the Orlando Sentinel offer much in the way of proof, other than a picture of the two with Roger Stone (weirdly). It could be simply a case of guilt by association to score political points. Gaetz was a vocal critic of Eric Swalwell. Or, it could be something else.
