A long-dormant volcano in southwest Iceland erupted on Friday 25 milesfrom the capital Reykjavik, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said.
Local media reported inbound and outgoing air traffic had been halted from Keflavik International Airport, the country's largest, servicing the capital. The eruption followed thousands of smaller earthquakes in the area in recent weeks, with officials bracing for an eruption as a result. 'Color code red'
"We ask people to stay calm and not under any circumstances go close to the eruption site or on Reykjanesbraut. First responders need to be able to drive freely to assess the situation. Scientists are working on assessing the eruption," police said. Iceland's Minister of Justice Aslaug Arna Sigurbjornsdottir shared an image of the eruption showing a night sky glowing bright red.
The Icelandic Police Department said it expected volcanic gas pollution to extend as far as the southern coast of the Ölfus municipality, where at least 2,000 people live, almost 50 kilometers away from Reykjavik. Authorities added that the pollution might continue through the night, urging people to stay indoors and keep windows shut.

Nice-looking neighborhood
Ever notice how they got funny sounding names for everything over there?
Yeah, but it’s a great place to buy real estate! Your land will double in size every 15-20 thousand years!
And many will be converted to beach-front property.
Yikes.
With all that SO2 in the air mixed with China’ pollution we should be having a cool Summer ihe the Eastern U.S.

in Australia's is overflowing ....they have a huge flood
problem down there threatening the suburbs
this volcano will no proceed to blast more “green house gases” into the atmosphere than all the cars and factories ever built put together....
...”now proceed”...
About 15 years ago there was another eruption in Iceland and it halted air travel in Europe for weeks. My wife was visiting England at the time, staying with relatives so she got to extend her vacation. It worked out well for her, probably not so well for people who had to pay for a few week’s worth of extra hotels and food.
She was lucky then.....Iceland ..a place I need to look closer at. I’ve been spending a lot of time Internet traveling to world countries and loving the discoveries I never realized. Fun to look at and learn but I’m a 100% stay in the good ol USA person.....no place like home!
Once separate they will have a war.
Wonder who the lower island will side with.
Ice vs. Land
Or maybe the island will be Belgium and that’s where they meet on the field (glacier) of battle.
Fight on skates. Like Hockey.
Viking hockey war!
Nowadays Iceland is most famous for “curing” Down syndrome by encouraging women to have prenatal screenings and abort DS babies, a move that is now gaining popularity in other European countries.
i swear...every time i see that..i think Linda Blair circa 1974....
I think you would love a trip to Kyoto..
;^)
Bunch of smug greenies having a great time
Up until the volcano erupts
Because of its singular geological position, Iceland has the special conditions needed to generate geothermal energy. The high degree of volcanism, along with the world renowned expertise of Icelandic specialists in the field of geothermal energy utilization, enables Iceland to be the world leader the production of this eco-friendly, sustainable and renewable power.
Geothermal energy in Iceland is used in diverse ways, including being harnessed for heating and the production of electricity. The energy comes rather cheap. So, in the wintertime, some sidewalks in Reykjavík (Reykjavik) and Akureyri are heated, and on the 40 km long road between Reykjavik and the International Airport at Keflavík (Keflavik), the lights on the lamp posts are on the whole night.
Caused by climate change, I’m sure! /s
Yes, their energy is all geothermal for the reasons you stated. On the other hand only 1% of their land is farmed so all their food etc. is imported....A beer at a pub at a special rate would be $7.00 and standard is $10 to $12. and that was a few years ago.
