US officials who are ready to fight China over Taiwan don't understand how much is at stake

US defense officials are increasingly warning of the potential for conflict with China over Taiwan.

There is almost no way in which the US could intervene in that conflict without devastating losses.

Many of America's leading military and political figures have issued increasingly alarmist warnings in recent days about the potential for conflict with China, especially related to issues surrounding Taiwan.

But before the US gets into a crisis that brings it to the threshold of war - or finds itself stumbling into one - policymakers and military leaders need to address some hard realities.

There is almost no scenario in which the United States can successfully intervene in a war between China and Taiwan that will not leave our country in far worse shape than it is right now; in a worst-case scenario, American territory could be struck by nuclear missiles.

In testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee last week, Adm. Phil Davidson, commander of US forces in the Indo-Pacific, warned that Chinese military developments looked to him like a nation planning for a war.

Davidson added that he believed China would attempt to forcibly reunify Taiwan "in the next six years." To guard against this possibility, Davidson asked Congress to provide a whopping $27 billion in additional funding over the current defense budget.

The next question from the Congressional members who are actually interested in military readiness should be: The Secretary of Defense says homosexuals and cross dressers are his priority along what everyone looks like. Where is the command emphasis on war fighting?

Does anyone think China is not watching the destruction of our military by the Biden Maoists?

There is certainly the scenario that existed in WWI: one power has nukes, the other does not.

Vietnam nukes = 0; USA nukes = 3,500. No usage?

The other scenario reduces to that one: a first strike takes out the other power’s nukes.

Too risky. Impossible to do a 100% first kill. Nuke subs also makes this impossible.

With regard to the latter, don’t forget that neither Putin nor Xi would be bothered by losing 20% of their populations if it meant the total destruction of the US.

Surrounded by allies in 1945 Hitler chose not to use gas, the equivalent of nukes in 1945.

I wish President Trump would have recognized Taiwan as a state before the United Nations. This would have stabbed China in the back and took away some of their beliefs that Taiwan is theirs!

China has already made a huge down payment to (pres) china Biden, who is absent when he is present.

They will call the debt in the future and Biden will have to pay back, not money, but in American lives and territory.

China has lots of nukes, too many people, a willingness to take a beating just to save face, and more they can afford to lose than we do.

You watch too many Hollyweird movies!!!

25 million casualties tops.

Yes. They’re willing to go to war to “save face”, which in their view is threatened by the existence of a “competing” government.

Japan and South Korea must be paying attention. Both had better forget about the US nuclear deterrent. De Gaulle was no fool. The Japanese and Koreans had best join the nuclear club if they want to survive. The only way we stop the Chinese from taking Taiwan, South Korea or Japan is to go nuclear.

What US officials are ready to fight China over anything? President Trump was “voted” out of office in November and left the WH in January. All his people are gone. The bureaucrats that remained, folks from the new administration and a sizable chunk of Congress are owned lock, stock and barrel by China.

There’s not a single, solitary sole in the current administration that would even think of taking on China for any reason.

Wait a minute....maybe Swalwell can broker a deal.

China can take Taiwan whenever it wants and they’ll probably be able to do it without firing a shot. There’s no Pacific Fleet coming to the rescue.

All China has to do is form a blockade of the ports, start docking their ships and off loading troops and military hardware. Interestingly, they’ll get their hands on Taiwan’s F16s and some other US military hardware that they can then steal and duplicate.

I'm not sure the US has the willingness to fight any sort of war beyond drones and smart bombs. We do have plenty of those, though.

On the one hand, it should take quite a bit to get us into a war, and we have certainly gone into far too many of them without a clearly defined purpose, or mission. On the other hand, we are the last of defense of a Western world that has grown soft, and obsessed with ridiculous things like gender identity and critical race theory. Our economy survives because of our position as the dominant economic engine in the world, but once an up and comer, like China, determines they can supplant us, it will be just a matter of time before they make their move.

Pretty sure.
Nukes have a shelf life. Their material decays, the components fail, etc.

https://www.quora.com/Do-nuclear-weapons-have-an-expiration-date

If either country managed to manufacture nukes without being discovered, the process of maintaining them would almost certainly give them away.

A friend of mine thinks that Japan has the unassembled components of nuclear weapons. They would only need the weapons grade material to assemble them. Again, that is carefully watched accounted for.

If it gets Taiwan, there will be other entities that will
be demanded and taken in short order.

China is gambling that the U. S. will roll over.

China will not be allowed to take Taiwan without a fight. There are several other countries that would be in that fight from the beginning of it with or without us, so we’ll be in it.

The presumption by some that nukes will never be used is illogical and childish thinking. And yes, nuclear war would be survivable for most people in spite of propaganda from leftist productions. War would continue after nuclear exchanges. There would be races to recruit, train and equip. It’s all in the plans.

And by the way, such a war would be the end of the current trade regime, and it won’t be wished away. We’ll either win it or lose it. Those are the real choices.

"Davidson added that he believed China would attempt to forcibly reunify Taiwan "in the next six years." To guard against this possibility, Davidson asked Congress to provide a whopping $27 billion in additional funding over the current defense budget."

Not sure what 27B could produce to mitigate an immediate 6-year threat, particularly when China is not just going to annex Taiwan but consolidate all of their military islands so as to demand the recognition of a no-go zone from the Spratly's to Qingdao.

To ensure compliance and a treaty to that effect, the PLA -- in a gross miscalculation -- will seige the Phillipines with a naval cordon and shut down their intra-island commerce (China owns Phillipines ferry services outright and most freight and port services).

That is a line that we will cross. Anyone who thinks China won't use nukes against the US mainland had better get a lead snorkel and swim fins...because you could easily find yourself swimming in radioactive glass.

Going nuclear is the last thing we want to do...but it’s still on the list!😎
