Why aren’t covid-19 vaccines being manufactured in standard prefilled syringes?

Prefilled syringes are the safest and standard recommended delivery device for most modern vaccines—so why are covid-19 vaccines being packaged in glass vials in the middle of a global glass shortage?

Some plastics would do better than glass.

The ones that would cost more than glass vials do.

There is a shortage of sand — and, it’s not because the federal government is in charge of the Sahara desert (Milton Friedman reference). At least, there’s a shortage of sand for construction; such that Saudi Arabia, etc. have to import sand. (The desert sand is too round & doesn’t make good concrete.)

Sure, but there’s a sand shortage apparently.

Just after I posted my reply to you, I saw this thread:

Now, I see what you were referring to. I knew about the building-sand shortage; but, was not aware that there’s even a shortage of sand for glass.

Yup. Beach sand doesn’t make good, cheap high quality glass.

My guesses are bulkiness/take up way more space per dose in the -25 degree F special freezers (delays rollout) and a higher cost per dose.

CPVC pipes don’t burst because they become brittle. They burst because the frozen liquid expands lengthwise in the pipe causing the remaining liquid to become pressurize above a psi level that the pipe can sustain.

plastic doesn't play well with the cold storage.

Eliminating glass vials would put thousands of Chinese kids out of work.
Is that what you want?

of course not. Gov. Cuomo is constantly talking about "youth in Asia". At least that is what it sounds like.

Question to anyone...

I have also noticed the C-19 needles are at least twice as long as flu shot needles.

Is that because they need to draw the vaccine from a vial?

Does the vaccine need to go to a certain muscle depth?

Other reasons?

Thank you!

CPVC and related materials are completely non-compatible at lower temperatures. As far as freezing, what usually fails is the fittings pop off when the contents freeze and expand. Actual pipe rupture is less common.

Plastic base product and finished product manufacturers have temperature, pressure and compatibility specifications for a reason. It is usually a pretty straight forward process to methodically work through material specifications. No big deal.

Even before actual freezing, as you mention, CPVC and related pipe materials become brittle. They become so brittle that they are easy to break or snap.

If you need a plastic at lower temperatures, the first things to look at are polypropylene as one example.

These vaccines have to be frozen I would think this would be the reason why in a syringe the thawing process would be VERY quick when transporting the vaccine!!!

Great question.

This link gives some likely answers about needle length and gauge.

Spktyr wrote: “Pretty much this. Standard one-use disposable syringes start to become brittle around 10 degrees C or 50 degrees F. When you get down to the -20C that the Moderna vaccine must be stored at, let alone the -70C that the Pfizer one requires for storage, the disposables (made of polypropylene) literally shatter into shards when touched.”

There you go. Spoiling a perfectly good conspiracy theory about featuring glass, Bill Gates, and the vaccine.

Why aren’t covid-19 vaccines being manufactured in standard prefilled syringes?

Can you store plastic syringes at the sub-zero temperatures the vaccine needs to be kept at?
