Japan supercomputer shows doubling masks offers little help preventing viral spread

Japanese supercomputer simulations showed that wearing two masks gave limited benefit in blocking viral spread compared with one properly fitted mask.

The findings in part contradict recent recommendations from the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that two masks were better than one at reducing a person's exposure to the coronavirus.

Researchers used the Fugaku supercomputer to model the flow of virus particles from people wearing different types and combinations of masks, according to a study released on Thursday by research giant Riken and Kobe University.

Using a single surgical-type mask, made of non-woven material, had 85% effectiveness in blocking particles when worn tightly around the nose and face. Adding a polyurethane mask on top boosted the effectiveness to just 89%.

Wearing two non-woven masks isn't useful because air resistance builds up and causes leakage around the edges.

"The performance of double masking simply does not add up," wrote the researchers, led by Makoto Tsubokura.

In general, professional grade N95 masks were the best in protecting against infection, followed by non-woven masks, cloth masks, and finally polyurethane types, the study showed.

The Riken research team previously used the Fugaku supercomputer to model how humidity can affect viral contagion and the infection risks in trains, work spaces, and other environments.

As the COVID-19 epidemic has worn on, scientific consensus has grown that the virus is spread through the air and masks are effective in controlling contagion. (Reporting by Rocky Swift; Editing by Lincoln Feast.)

Well by golly, that makes me at least as smart as a Japanese super computer. I need a raise. But then I’d have to get a job............

Particles?

What kind of “particles”?

They sure as shootin’ ain’t blocking ‘rona balls.

Computers with masks don’t prevent viruses.

"Japan supercomputer shows doubling masks offers little help preventing viral spread"

So wear three masks. /super-sarc

Johns Hopkins doctor says US will have herd immunity by April because more than half have already been infected (2.19.21)

Also, I question integrity of CDC based on following links, some links suggestive that CDC may be flip-flopping on masks versus COVID-19.

Corrections, insights welcome.

Regarding questionable quarantines and masks, citizens in all states need to work with their state lawmakers to make the following changes to their state constitutions regarding quarantines imo.

Denmark did the biggest study last year on masks. Concluded they are next to useless outdoors.

So don’t bother outside. Thee end.

So, you’re an expert at writing and running mathematical model simulation? It would blow your mind on the computer HP for a filtration simulation considering the media and particle size variations, etc.

I suggest that anyone who thinks a mask prevents you from getting a virus should wear ten masks.

Let us get this over with.

Well I have been in Vietnam for this whole time, and EVERYONE is wearing a mask in public.

Have been, the whole time.

The country has one of the lowest case histories of COVID, of anywhere in the entire globe.

Of course the key to this study is wearing a PROPERLY FITTED mask.

How many people have taken a class in the proper fit of a mask, outside the medical world?
How many men understand they MUST be clean shaven for the mask to work?
How many people understand that their normal oxygen intake is around 95?
How many of those understand that below that number, there is risk of very serious medical consequences?
How many know that mask wearing lowers that number by 6%?
