Las Vegas restaurant owners struggle with new form of dine and dash

Some restaurant owners say a new form of dine and dash is taking hold amid the pandemic.

Instead of a customers ditching the check at the end of a meal, this new form of dine and dash is being carried out via food delivery apps.

Eric Lipsky, owner of Bell’s BBQ in Henderson, said lately he has seen an increase in mistakes and issues reported through his third party delivery services. Customers get their order, then dispute the charges.

“I can’t tell whether it is a legitimate issue where we made a mistake or if someone is just trying to get a refund for the delivery service that they are using,” said Lipsky.

They’ve learned the tips and tricks and maybe realized that if they mark something as incorrect, they might be able to get their money back,” said Lipsky.

In a statement to FOX5, a Grubhub spokesperson said:

"We have no tolerance for misconduct, and if we discover that a customer is misusing our platform, we will promptly block their account. We review refund requests to determine the best course of action, which is often Grubhub providing a refund to the restaurant owner for the cost of the meal."

Lipsky said most of the time, it’s not the third party delivery services that are picking up the costs.

“As of now, one hundred percent of the mistakes for most of the services, most of the time, are being pushed on to us,” said Lipsky.

Refund requests, Lipsky said, rely on the honor system and sometimes there is no way to tell if a customer is being honest.

Print the entire order off on the reciept. Make sure the driver checks it and photographs it like Amazon, and its a done deal.

Huh - the local McDonald’s had a new, large, sticker on their door a few weeks back saying there were no refunds on food.

I was wondering why they suddenly needed to change their policy.

I don’t think they can do that for sanitary reasons. Everything needs to be sealed.

Give the restaurants the ability to leave negative feedback against the customers. Problem solved.

It’s being institutionalized. Eviction moratoriia, are a prime example.

Too bad the mafia doesn’t offer protection to restaurants any longer.

Defrauding an Innkeeper used to be a serious crime. Nowadays? Not so much.

It’s easy to do on Uber too, I admit. There were times that it will take me minutes to get my point across but they refund you for the smallest of excuses. “The driver was rude”-refund ride. Same thing with Uber Eats or Postmates.

Wont work. Same reason why sellers cant leave negative feedback for Ebay and Amazon buyers.

I work Door Dash part-time. Chipotle places orders out on a rack for drivers to pick up as needed. It would be easy to grab any bag of food and run with it, whether you work for Door Dash or not. Some businesses are better than others.

Check your food? No way. I won’t touch it. I might notice if you ordered five burgers and they send two hot dogs, like the time a Grub Hub driver took my customer’s order from Five Guys, but otherwise it is between the restaurant and the customer.

I got free food from Uber Eats because they delivered it to the wrong house and ran away as soon as they rung the doorbell. COVID! Oh, the horror!

I called Uber Eats to try and locate the right address to give them the food, but their Privacy Policy prevented that.

Privacy Policy? Really? In this day and age?

You’d be surprised how many people request that I leave the food on their doorstep. I take a photo of it and post so they know it’s there. So far, so good, but I would much rather let them take the food out of my delivery bag so we both witness the delivery.

This is just the continuation of the breakdown of civil order. Things such as the Golden Rule and talking to your neighbors on the porch are history. It’s just so sad to see this country becoming like a Mad Max movie.

Take a look at the Instacart shopper posts on Reddit! These scum customers report fraudulent non-deliveries all the time. They get their money back and the shopper (gig worker) gets fired. Nice huh?

Admittedly, I drive for Doordash. Have been since October of last year, and I love it. It keeps the bills paid and food on the table. Can’t ask for better than that.

There IS a problem, not just in Vegas, with people who are cheapskates who don’t want to pay for food.

When someone makes an order in Doordash, they’re given the option to either “Hand it to me” or “Leave at the door”. If they select “Hand it to me”, we knock at the door and give it to the customer. If it’s “Leave at the door”, when we mark it as delivered, our apps go to a screen that prompts us to take a picture. We then take one with the food or whatever it is and the address of the place, if possible. That is then sent to the customer, and a copy, I believe, to Doordash.

For those who know the system, they’ll make a food order (el cheapo places like Taco Bell and McD’s are most popular), usually with no tip. The order will be picked up by the driver, who will deliver it. The scammer will have selected “Hand it to me”, but will ALSO add in the delivery notes, “Do not knock or ring the doorbell”...which negates the prompt for the driver to take a picture. The scammer will wait until the driver leaves, grab the food, then call Doordash to say “My food never got here”. They will then demand a refund, which Doordash will give them. What they may not know is that Doordash then sends the driver an email, saying that “you’ve violated your contract and are subject to deactivation”...which means they’re up for being fired.

The accused driver then has the opportunity to argue (by filling out a form) and (if they were smart), they’ll also send a picture (*taken on their own, outside the app). If Doordash, upon investigating it, finds the driver was NOT at fault, nothing happens.

We’ve also had people threaten us if we try to show that food was delivered. We had one guy put in the delivery notes that he would call the police to charge us with trespassing if we knock on the door, and also if any pictures are taken. I guarantee that if the driver followed this guys demands, the driver would definitely be getting a “contract violation” email...because this jerk would most certainly have called Doordash and whined that “my food wasn’t delivered and I want a refund!”.

It really sucks that people are putting people’s livelihoods at stake because some cheapskates don’t want to pay for a meal.

I'm curious why you say "admittedly".

Some people consider driving for Doordash, or Uber Eats, or Grubhub, or Postmates as “not real jobs”, and wonder why people who drive for these places don’t “get a real job”.

Trust me...this IS a real job.
