ABERGAVENNY

This got a lot of airplay on KEZY, Orange County, California's rock blaster, in the summer of 1969, so I thought it was a big hit. However, it didn't chart nationally. I also thought the title was "Africa, Benny," as did everyone else.

Life In A Northern Town ... by Dream Academy

The video has scenes from both northern England and the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania, but the band is British and the song is a wistful look back to a better time before the big industries faded in Manchester and Newcastle in England.

This song is thoroughly British--written and performed by Englishmen--even though it takes place in the US and the band's name sounds American. It's a song I play over and over when USC wins a berth at the Rose Bowl.

Blue Hills of Pasadena--Al Benny's Broadway Boys (1928)
