Power cut across Texas as snow, ice blanket southern Plains

DALLAS (AP) — A winter storm dropping snow and ice also sent temperatures plunging across the southern Plains, prompting a power emergency in Texas a day after conditions canceled flights and impacted traffic across large swaths of the U.S.

Rotating power outages were initiated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, early Monday morning, meaning thousands went without electricity for short periods as temperatures fell into the teens near Dallas and 20s (about minus 5 degrees Celsius) around Houston.

Officials in Houston had warned people to prepare for outages and hazardous roads — conditions similar to what residents might see in the wake of a Category 5 hurricane

The region had been gearing up for the winter weather for the better part of the weekend. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for all of the state’s 254 counties. Abbott, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt and Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson each activated National Guard units to assist state agencies with tasks including rescuing stranded drivers.

President Joe Biden also declared an emergency in Texas in a statement Sunday night. The declaration is intended to add federal aid to state and local response efforts.

16 degrees and sunny here at the Hazwaste family compound southwest of Houston. A little surprised we haven’t been hit by an outage yet, but then there are so few homes out here in the sticks maybe they figured we’d provide diminishing returns.

We have one of those Generacs too, 22.5KV, along with a 500 gallon LP tank. I’ll never have another house without it, especially here on the Gulf coast.

Shut down more coal and lignite plants (which were running perfectly well) because of scary Climate Change. While people are freezing and possibly dying maybe they will realize there’s something more sinister than Climate Change happening around them.

The leftists changed their preferred lingo from “global warming” to “climate change” a few years ago, so we can’t say we didn’t have fair warning that the whole green push was complete b.s.

I live in California, home of the rolling blackouts, but my home is exempt from them because it is on the same power block as a fire station. Perhaps you do too.

Yeah, a heat pump draws about 5 amps, the air handler 3 ( like a decent vacuum cleaner) meanwhile forced electric air draws about 60 Amps....

NG/Propane, much less as only a control circuit and the AH runs.

I use my heat pump until temps drop below 20, then I either deal with it solely with my wood stove or as in the case right now, I switch to emergency forced air heat....to supplement my wood stove.

Modern Heat pumps (SEER 18+) can do quite a god job down into the teens or lower, and draw very little electricity comparatively to Forced air electric.

Propane is not for everyone, however, it is a good option in high electric cost areas.

Many homes built in the 80-90s were not designed for NG/LPG, such as mine. Unless I do major work, I cannot install a gas furnace.

What was your NG/LPG cost? Add the electric and gas and that will tell the whole story.... I bet the combined cost is about the same as full electric, just not the grid draw equivalent.

I dropped down to a 12KW for less propane usage. The only thing I can’t do is run the hot water heater and the “AC at the same time. In 07 we were without power for 11 days in an ice storm. After hearing the genny in my ears 24/7 I put in a free standing propane stove in the living room. Controls are battery powered so could shut the genny down at night.

2nd 15KW in the shop to run the well as needed or can be used on the house if the propane one goes down.

Wish I was a lot further south right now. Like Costa Rica.
