New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is pushing forward with a green agenda, calling for a ban on natural gas hookups on new buildings in the city by 2030.
“We need to make clear that New York City will renounce fossil fuels fully. Therefore, we need to ban fossil fuel connections in the city by the end of this decade, literally ensuring that our only choice is renewable energy,” de Blasio said in his " State of the City" address on Friday.
De Blasio’s goals include moving the New York City government to run on “renewable energy in the next four years.” The plan relies on Canadian hydropower, imported into the United States through new transmission lines. Lawmakers in San Francisco passed a similar ordinance in November last year.
All construction after June 2021 must use electricity instead of gas for cooking, heating, and cooling. The announcement comes after 41 cities have adopted plans to reduce reliance on natural gas.
In April 2019, de Blasio introduced his “Green New Deal.” The mayor vowed to ban “inefficient” glass and steel skyscrapers and warned that if building owners refuse to make their properties more efficient, they could face fines up to $1 million. New York has committed to being carbon neutral by 2050 and implementing congestion charges in certain Manhattan neighborhoods.

Sounds to me that Kaiser Wilhelm Deblasio knows that a bankrupt city can’t afford the costs of repairing and upgrading old gas mains. Can’t say that publicly without adversely impacting bond ratings.

Combined cycle plants definitely have a good peak efficiency compared to other types of generation. The article you linked said the record the Japanese plant attained was 63.08% but of course one assumes that this is at the beginning of a campaign when everything is in tip top condition…. the numbers at the end of a campaign before an outage are always lower. And don’t even get me started on the games people play with their ‘uncertainty analyses’. Regardless, for me the more impressive insight from the link is that “The 7HA turbine can ramp up to full load in less than 30 minutes, which allows for greater grid stability with renewable and alternative energy sources.” That is faster than I’d have expected… one of the big issues in the past when trying to incorporate IWTs and solar is that the gas fired stations had to be able to react fast enough to catch the dips… hence simple-cycle gas turbines instead of combined cycle were selected which of course immediately drops peak efficiency from say 60 to 40% and that differential basically meant that the power produced from IWTs and solar was useless since it could have been produced with no additional gas if all the plants were all combined cycle. Regardless, a more meaningful value is the efficiency of the gas turbine plants on an ongoing basis if it can take advantage of its complete combined cycle capabilities… that means through part load and full load conditions and while ramping up and ramping down. If they are constantly cycling trying to accommodate IWTs and solar, the only efficiency that really matters is what the trend line says it is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. And as a separate but semi-related issue, the more a plant cycles, the higher the maintenance costs.
As for your heat pump system, sure…. put one kW in and get 6 kW of heat out. However, there is far more to this than that basic math. What did you spend for the total system? How much real estate did you use…. and are you suggesting that this is relevant to NYC where buildings are built on postage stamps? Or did you drop two wells down? Do you think dropping well down all over NYC is a practical idea? There are already endless problems with contamination of the ground water table from wells that aren’t looked after or decommissioned properly. How long have you had your system and have you had any maintenance problems with it? A few years ago when I investigated these they had a horrible record of bad control problems and it seemed that the number of technicians who knew what they were doing was few and far between.

Gas is the King for cooking and heating and Oil is the King for Heating.
Force Delblasiosmuck to go try heating his home with electricity and , oh wait, they are exempt from those charges or have a steal deal with the Electrical companies.
I wonder what powers the Electrical generation for the State of NY, apart from methane (think about it)

In doing genealogical research I read old newspapers.
The Automobile was consider a savior to New York because “road apples” were both health risk and expensive to clean up and dispose of.
We are hooked up to NG and have a fireplace and stove that work, even when the electricity goes out (which it does with increasing frequency these days)
My sister has a “heat pump” which means her house never really heats up enough in colder weather. I just pushed my thermostat up to 74 — it’s been bitter cold and sleeting/snowing since yesterday and I don’t handle being chilly very well.
Prepare to freeze in the dark, as you watch the windmills turning lazily in the breeze.
Where is the electricity to charge batteries for electric cars going to come from? New windmills and solar panels?

There is a huge amount of amps a restaurant will need to pump in to power everything. High voltage 3 phase, all the new conduits and wiring, massive transformers all over the streets. Or you have a single gas line. Politicians. They know everything.
