Growing number of GOP senators oppose impeachment trial

WASHINGTON (AP) — A growing number of Republican senators say they oppose holding an impeachment trial, a sign of the dimming chances that former President Donald Trump will be convicted on the charge that he incited a siege of the U.S. Capitol.

House Democrats, who will walk the impeachment charge of “incitement of insurrection” to the Senate on Monday evening, are hoping that strong Republican denunciations of Trump after the Jan. 6 riot will translate into a conviction and a separate vote to bar Trump from holding office again. But GOP passions appear to have cooled since the insurrection, and now that Trump’s presidency is over, Republican senators who will serve as jurors in the trial are rallying to his legal defense, as they did during his first impeachment trial last year.

“I think the trial is stupid, I think it’s counterproductive,” said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.. He said that “the first chance I get to vote to end this trial, I’ll do it” because he believes it would be bad for the country and further inflame partisan divisions.

If they don’t hold the trial, I hope there is someway that they can dismiss the charges or formally state that they will not hold it. Otherwise the Democrats will hang it over Trump’s head for two entire years. This is what they did about obstruction of justice in the completely bogus Mueller witchhunt.

It also is pretty good indication that they do, in fact, FEAR Trump. Now why is that the case?

Might be awkward for them to try on the riots after the BLM-supporting founder of Insurgence USA videorecorded himself at the Green-Revolutionlike slaying of a woman in the Capitol outside Pelosi’s lounge, knowing that, according to his brother, the agitator John Earle Sullivan had 266 followers headed to DC for the event. We should be paying attention to every arrest to see who else is connected to him. Suddenly Pelosi doesn’t seem as interested in finding out who all was there anymore.

“As details emerge”? Emerge? Wouldn’t it be a novel idea if people actually LISTENED to Trump’s speech on the 6th? Trump used the word,”peacefully.”

Part II for the intellectually unwashed: Antifa rushed the capitol while Trump was STILL SPEAKING.

Republicans should be in the face’s of the lying press and democrats. Instead, crickets.

Someone posted that the minority leader can be appointed by the reps and can be from the outside...ie Donald J. Trump.

Not sure if I have the story correct...but something along those lines.

It’s an unconstitutional (don’t care what Mittens says)

But, but, but Mittens said he read some law journal that said it was ok.

The Constitution gives the House of Representatives the right to “chuse their speaker” but doesn’t specify a procedure. This means every session of the House must first decide how to choose a Speaker before it can actually choose one.

Traditionally, Congress has adopted the following procedure (proposed by Thomas Jefferson). First, the party caucuses each vote to select a candidate. Second, the entire House votes on the two nominees. Since House members invariably vote along party lines in these elections, the majority candidate always wins.

Thus the really important election is the nomination vote within the majority caucus. And House rules do not require that a nominee be a member of Congress.

The Repubs will control the House in 2022....

Ergo....elects Donald J. Trump as speaker.

So Trump can campaign for a Senate seat in 2024.

Dims,...progressives....communists all driven further into sploody head insanity.

Meanwhile De Santis becomes President in 2024.

Slowly, ever so slowly, it’s dawning on these geniuses that they would look like fools impeaching a man who is no longer in office and that the man they were “impeaching” is more popular than any of them ever will be.

Who gives a #### what the reason is, as long as they do the right thing.

You sounds as if you are telling us something we didn’t know :)

I hope Trump does start a new party because all that will happen if he supports conservatives in primaries is that once elected, if they win, they will become RINO mush as usual.

Patriot Party. I’d sign on

Insurrection ... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

I love how even Brietbart pushes that crap now!

What happened on the 6th was ridiculous, but it wasn’t a frigging “insurrection”. It was idiots doing idiotic things.

Yes, I know someone died. However, don’t you find it odd that it has taken the media forever to get the name of the cop that shot that female Air Force veteran “insurrectionist”?

When George Floyd was put down, the cop’s name was everywhere in nanoseconds. His entire life story burned into everyone’s head before the his gun had even cooled. I don’t think the name of the capitol cop has been released! Then you had the press all but egging people on so that they’d have really nice riot optics they could blame on Trump. That’s not insurrection though ... that’s “doing their duty to report facts”.

When those scumbag teachers stormed the Wisconsin capitol building, were they called “insurrectionists”. NO! They had adjectives like “courageous” in front of their names when the press was throwing out their editorials disguised as fact.

Where were the calls for putting down “insurrectionists” when the Antifa freaks were burning billions of dollars worth of property this summer? Or how about when they jam traffic by acting like morons and lying in the middle of interstates? I’m sorry, but what happened on the 6th, despite it being the nation’s capitol, was not an insurrection. It was NOTHING compared to the way these Antifa waste of lives behaved. Nothing.

Our media is a sick collective of human garbage. May they rot in hell when they depart this planet.

Slightly OT, but, if you watch the full vid by the Antifa guy (Sullivan) of the scene where Ashli Babbit was shot and killed, there were security people on the crowd side of the door, facing the crowd. I mean, their butts were literally up against the door, but, they were not being attacked or seriously threatened by the crowd, other than Sullivan was yelling at them to leave so they would not get hurt. At first they stay put, then, inexplicably, they leave. Then someone starts smashing the window nearest to the camera. Seen better in other vids are heavily armed police now immediately behind Ashli; they back up slightly but not seemingly due to any confrontation and apparently unconcerned about the door, as the window smashing stops... but someone (Sullivan) yells “Gun! Gun!”; Ashli moves up to and inexplicably jumps up in the already broken out window on the other side of the doorway and is instantly shot.

I would agree that “holding” that door was important, and might even justify the shooter’s action if he thought he was the last line of defense and alone in that. But then the actions of the security people and heavily armed police on the crowd side of the door make no sense. Why did the security at the door vamoose before the heavily armed police physically replaced them? Why did those heavily armed police, who were at one point maybe 3-4 steps away from the doorway, fall back toward the stairwell?

AP- from the linked article: Trump’s supporters invaded the Capitol

They were wearing "Trump supporter" costumes. I know they were not all what they looked like.
