Growing number of GOP senators oppose impeachment trial

WASHINGTON (AP) — A growing number of Republican senators say they oppose holding an impeachment trial, a sign of the dimming chances that former President Donald Trump will be convicted on the charge that he incited a siege of the U.S. Capitol.

House Democrats, who will walk the impeachment charge of “incitement of insurrection” to the Senate on Monday evening, are hoping that strong Republican denunciations of Trump after the Jan. 6 riot will translate into a conviction and a separate vote to bar Trump from holding office again. But GOP passions appear to have cooled since the insurrection, and now that Trump’s presidency is over, Republican senators who will serve as jurors in the trial are rallying to his legal defense, as they did during his first impeachment trial last year.

“I think the trial is stupid, I think it’s counterproductive,” said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.. He said that “the first chance I get to vote to end this trial, I’ll do it” because he believes it would be bad for the country and further inflame partisan divisions.

Dems will continue the "orange Man Bad" schtick,

Yeah, well the Bad Orange Man won't be on the ballot in 2022. And if things in this country don't get dramatically better, then blaming Trump will just seem lame to a bunch of voters who didn't particularly like him.

“But I would file a court case if I were Trump in regards to the unconstitutional impeachment in the HOR.”

I would too.

Simple: Trump lawyers will not be allowed to present evidence of voter fraud because the trial is not about VF, but about Trump’s inability to hold public office. “Evidence” of Trump (whatever Pelosi considers to be the evidence) inciting the “riots” will be presented, no doubt...

I’m sure Romney wants the trial to proceed so he can vote “guilty” , and make the media and Democrats love him, at least for one day.

Roberts just made it clear there can be no trial. They can get together, scream and shout and vote on whatever they please but it’s meaningless.

The Constitution says the Chief Justice shall preside over an impeachment trial. You don’t have the Chief, it’s not a trial, it’s just a show.

You can pretend, go ahead, Trump will reveal things you’d like kept quiet and your vote won’t be codified. A vote that Trump can’t run again has no power either.

I know you Democrats can win every election except the ones you give away to Republicans you own, but it’s not going to matter. By the time midterms come around you will be the most universally hated party in the history of this country. A National Strike is what is in your future.

I intend to fight like hell to get the RINO’s defeated in the primary. If a RINO wins the primary I am staying home on election day. I would just as soon have a dim as a RINO, there is no difference.

Those GOP toadies can go straight to hell. There will never be another vote from this house for any politician that professes GOP. I want a representative not a liar that will pee on my leg and try to tell me it’s raining.

I agree! It’s discouraging how often I think I’ve found someone who isn’t a RINO, only watch that person prove me wrong. *cough* Dan Crenshaw *cough*

That would be an easy one for the Supreme Court. They’d just say that the decision to impeach is entirely up to the House. Not so easy when you get to the Senate though. The decision to convict when you are not even in office is something the Court would have to weigh in on.

Somebody posted earlier that one of the items in the articles of impeachment was about President Trump making false claims of election fraud (haven’t read the actual articles myself). I’m not a lawyer, but that would seem to open the door pretty wide for the defense to present evidence that the claims were not false.

“The decision to convict when you are not even in office is something the Court would have to weigh in on.”

That is a classic bill of attainder.

BTW, in response to both? We will now find out if there is actually anything at all left of the constitution.

It would if they allow him a defense.

But since they already abandoned things like due process long ago, I think they are just going to put Trump on a scale and see if he weighs as much as a duck to see if he’s made of wood, and if so is a warlock fit to be burned.

they only care about being reelected

Well, that's a big problem then, because, stupid as they are, they can count votes like a pimp in a whorehouse can count money.

If you are right, and they fear being defeated unless they vote to convict Trump, what are you actually saying?

Any GOP senator who votes for impeachment needs to be primaried and voted out of office on his/her next election. That probably means Romney, Murkowski, Collins, Sasse, Toomey for sure and probably Turtle.

But it won’t matter. Due to illegal immigration, voter fraud, and suppression of conservatives on the internet, it won’t matter if every GOP voter who voted for Trump voted in the 2022 midterms.

Time for Trump to come out and beg for a trial. Sunshine is the best disinfectant.

“...It is a growing number only because these pussy Republicans do not have principles and they only care about being reelected....”

THIS. Plus, they’re seeing a hefty chunk of their base dwindling away....kinda rapidly too.

They can’t **** us over if they’re not there to do it.

I’d vote every damn one of them out anyway.
