Trump Reportedly Wants to Create a New Political Party. Should He?
PJ Media ^ | 01/21/2021 | Matt Margolis

President Trump wants to create a new political party after leaving office, says the Wall Street Journal. According to the report, “President Trump has talked in recent days with associates about forming a new political party, according to people familiar with the matter, an effort to exert continued influence after he leaves the White House.”

According to sources, President Trump says he would want to call his new political party the “Patriot Party,” but the White House refused to comment.

It is not known just how serious Trump is about starting a new political party. As the WSJ notes, to do so “would require a significant investment of time and resources,” and third parties “have typically failed to draw enough support to play a major role in national elections.” But President Trump is perhaps the most uniquely positioned person to do such a thing, as he has a huge base of supporters, many of whom were not heavily involved in the Republican Party.

Aside from the question of whether or not he can or will start a new political party, the real issue here, I think, is whether he should.

I’ve seen many Republican friends express disappointment with the GOP in recent weeks for their failure to fight for President Trump and his priorities, as well as their criticism of Trump in the wake of the Capitol riots following the false narrative that he incited an insurrection. In fact, Republican wobbliness preceded President Trump’s term in the White House. The corrupt Obama-Biden administration spent eight years violating the Constitution without significant pushback from the Republican Party. Aside from the refusal to give Merrick Garland a hearing upon his nomination to the Supreme Court, the GOP was an ineffective check on the abuses of the Obama-Biden administration,

RE: I want to start the SEA party.

There is a movement already to that effect. Change the ‘S’ to ‘T’ and it exists.

“Abe Lincoln won the same way”

Abe won with the new Republican party. The Whigs were just too far gone to save.

Why keep or attempt to keep the republicans as our representatives if they don’t represent us?

The democrats don’t represent us either of course.

But if the republicans getting destroyed moves us closer to having a party that actually represents us, I’m in.

If continuing to support republicans has as its cost that no part represents me, i’m not going to continue to support the republicans.

The “price” of this rebellion would be a democrat government for a period. I’m not convinced the cost of a republican government would be much better.

I’m all in. Let the republicans lose their asses.

“thus guaranteeing Democrat election dominance?”

the democrats have already guaranteed dominance with ballot fraud and the GOP is complicit.

No. Splitting the conservative vote would ensure democratic majorities in government.

YES!!

If Trump doesn’t form a new party, many conservatives will stay home next election. He can gives these Americans something to go out and vote FOR-instead of the “lesser of two evils”. Aren’t we sick of that?? A new party is the ONLY way our vote counts. Without a new party, Mitch McConnell stays in control, Liz Cheney stays in control, Karl Rove stays influential.
We need to start acting and thinking, outside the box.

Trump is sending a shot across the bow of the GOP prior to the impending impeachment trial. Still standing by my prediction that Biden will ask the Senate not to forward with the impeachment trial in the interests of unity.

IMO this is kabuki theater meant to burnish Biden’s image and to avoid a trial that could be devastating to both Reps and Dems.

"Could a new party seriously challenge the two major parties?"

Ask the Federalists or the Whigs....

Trump is using this threat to thwart Republicans in the Senate from voting to impeach him after his first term expired, to prevent his potential return through a writ of quo warranto, or re-election in 2024. So he is holding this over them for now. No final decision will likely come until after the impeachment issue is resolved in the Senate. If the Senate does vote to convict him, and bar him from returning as president, expect him to announce the new party ASAP.

They already call us nazis, terrorists, etc, and plan to use the full force of the federal government to hunt us down, make us unemployable, and find any reason they can to lock us up. It won’t matter to them whether you are still registered as an (R) or as something else.

Republicans killed the Tea Party.

Quite right. But this time it seems likely a Trump-initiated group would have a dramatic numbers impact on the R party.

Everyone knows what the Democrat platform is. They’ve been very successful in advancing their agenda.

What is the Republican party platform? How successful have they been in advancing their agenda?

“It’s a recipe for failure.”

It’s also a recipe for failure to continue voting for a party that is controlled by enemy collaborators.

I vote “yes” for a new party. The Republican (a branch of the Uni-Party) brand is now tarnished beyond any redemption. The Patriot Party will start off with 70 million VOTERS. The Republican/Democrat Party can openly merge, and the Republican brand can go the way of the Whigs.

You and the author are correct. I would note that I believe the Republican establishment exists to give the illusion of choice and to make sure someone conservative is not elected.
