Trump Reportedly Wants to Create a New Political Party. Should He?

President Trump wants to create a new political party after leaving office, says the Wall Street Journal. According to the report, “President Trump has talked in recent days with associates about forming a new political party, according to people familiar with the matter, an effort to exert continued influence after he leaves the White House.”

According to sources, President Trump says he would want to call his new political party the “Patriot Party,” but the White House refused to comment.

It is not known just how serious Trump is about starting a new political party. As the WSJ notes, to do so “would require a significant investment of time and resources,” and third parties “have typically failed to draw enough support to play a major role in national elections.” But President Trump is perhaps the most uniquely positioned person to do such a thing, as he has a huge base of supporters, many of whom were not heavily involved in the Republican Party.

Aside from the question of whether or not he can or will start a new political party, the real issue here, I think, is whether he should.

I’ve seen many Republican friends express disappointment with the GOP in recent weeks for their failure to fight for President Trump and his priorities, as well as their criticism of Trump in the wake of the Capitol riots following the false narrative that he incited an insurrection. In fact, Republican wobbliness preceded President Trump’s term in the White House. The corrupt Obama-Biden administration spent eight years violating the Constitution without significant pushback from the Republican Party. Aside from the refusal to give Merrick Garland a hearing upon his nomination to the Supreme Court, the GOP was an ineffective check on the abuses of the Obama-Biden administration,

NO. We either capture the GOP, or we lose totally.

Teddy Roosevelt started the Bull Moose party as an offshoot of the Republican party.

The radical progressive Democrat Woodrow Wilson won 400 electoral votes with only 40% of the popular vote, because of the split among the Republicans and the Bull Moose party.

Abe Lincoln won the same way, in a 4-party split.

Not to mention John Anderson, Ross Perot, etc.

It’s a recipe for failure.

Trump should call it ‘The America First Party’.

I don’t think it should be called the Patriot Party, because the press would call it the PP ( pee pee ) party, of course conflating it with the fake dossier.

Unless we can get an honest election, nothing anyone can do matters.

Trump Reportedly Wants to Create a New Political Party. Should He?

Yes.

But after creating it, he should have its members register as Republicans just before an election, unless his party numbers over 100 million members. Then it can actually replace the Republican party.

This has been tried before and failed every time (Remember Ross Perot). It would only help Democrats. Not a Good Idea!

The author correctly traces the GOP’s fecklessness and ineptitude back to the years prior to 2016. In fact, I’d suggest that Trump’s victory in the GOP primaries was more remarkable — and far more indicative of a problem within the GOP — than his victory over Hillary Clinton. Trump wasn’t even a Republican before he started his campaign as a political candidate, and his nomination was a scathing indication of the contempt the Republican base has had for the party’s leadership.

Yes but more important than top-down approach, start at the local level in city and state wide seats first and reach for attainable US House seats

Could a new party seriously challenge the two major parties?

Would a new party simply weaken the Republican party, and drain votes from Republicans, and grease the skids for easy Democrat victories in future elections?

Trump Reportedly Wants to Create a New Political Party. Should He?

Not just 'no,' but HELL NO.

Why should Trump split the conservative vote between the Freedom Party and the Republican Party, thus guaranteeing Democrat election dominance?

It is not only a stupid idea, it is a suicidal idea.

But the Democrats would love to see it.

The Patriot Party, or Constitutional Party.

Our country has turned into “Gangs of New York.”

“President Trump wants to create a new political party after leaving office, says the Wall Street Journal”

“According to sources”

The same words in every article about trump that turned out to be untrue. This story is making the rounds in conservative media now.

Until I hear it from trump himself, Im labeling this one “fake news”

President Trump wants to create a new political party after leaving office, .....says the Wall Street Journal.

Well I’m not hearing that from Trump and I’ll be danged if I’ll let the press run further fake stories surrounding Trump to get their headlines.

Yes, create the Patriot party. Right now we only have one deep state uniparty. It would be nice to have a choice again.

“NO. We either capture the GOP, or we lose totally.”

The GOP is a dead husk. The GOP is Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham.

Sometimes the cancer is too far gone to save the patient.

If we stay with the GOP we lose, and even when we win we still lose, because... Mitch and Lindsey and their ilk.

So, in reality, we have nothing to lose.
