It is impossible to imagine Republican senators voting to give Democratic-leaning areas full representation, so the issue must be dead on arrival in the upper chamber. D.C. statehood will get struck down by the Supreme Court, especially in its current conservative-leaning state.
Part of me thinks the GOP should just let it pass so the Supreme Court can rule it unconstitutional now, forever ending the issue outside a constitutional amendment. If they block it, and Biden replaces a conservative or two on the Court, who knows what might happen?

this event was way before my time as I’m a ‘78 model but became familiar with it by reading a book about the Dulles brothers.
If the ‘secession’ idea becomes serious, I’m in.
The main question will be who separates from whom?
Will someone from a Red area be able to work in a Blue area?
Can they own property, if so how much?
Will their health insurance, their license to carry, their voter registration, marriage license, college degree be recognized in any state?
Today’s Dems are no where near mature enough to ponder these kind of questions without going full partisan.
It’s certainly very complicated for the reasons you point out... Obviously the biggest issue we face as a nation is blue state vs red state... it’s blue urban centers vs red rural/small town America. I don’t see how thing separate upon the state boundaries as they are today.
I suspect we will see the concepts address in a manner serious manner after the commies have their first 90 day reign of terror set to start on Weds.
DC is set by the constitution, thus requiring a constitutional amendment. PR is technically a sovereign state and will require a vote of its people to become a state, subject to all the reg’s and taxes of the feds.

As others have said, Puerto Rico has had Republicans governors and whatnot. They're not a 100% slam dunk for Democrats. It probably wouldn't happen, but imagine the schadenfreude if Democrats ramrodded Puerto Rico statehood through Congress on party line votes, only for Puerto Rico to turn around and elect two Republicans U.S. Senators (or, hell, even just one.)

Well that’s a lock. 4 new Marxist’s senators and at least six new Marxist supreme court slobs.
I remember that each territory had to have at least 200000 citizens and a plebiscite needed to be done. I’d have to look up what the Feds had to do on their part. Also a question of apportionment if the congress was to be locked at 438 members. I’d bet they’ll take them from one of the growing red states...that will also cause an uproar. Of course any new states gets 2 senator each...with the assumption that they will be Dem senators. PR’s liberals aren’t quite the same as mainland Libs and the Dems might be quite surprised at what they’ll get...more ferociously Catholic and less tolerant of alternative lifestyles....they’ll be wanting a big bail out of their own debt as well and will be harder for Mainland Dem leadership to control.
It is a long democrat tradition. Keep calling referendums until you finally get the sheeple to vote how you want them to vote, then call it final.
You forgot about Montana (1). The state has a brand-new conservative GOP governor. Oh, and while we’re at it, VT, MA and MD each have 2 Democrat senators and a RINO governor.
As soon as they return from that dark, smoke-filled back room, they will have a change of heart or else.
