An increase to a $15 minimum wage marks a core component of Biden’s new stimulus plan
Business Insider ^ | January 15, 2021 | Ayelet Sheffey

President-elect Joe Biden's newly unveiled stimulus plan includes a federal minimum wage increase to $15 an hour, although the measure is likely to face pushback in Congress.

Currently set at $7.25 an hour, Biden moved to nearly double the country's minimum wage in his $1.9 trillion economic relief package. The plan would also include the elimination of separate minimum-wage thresholds for workers who receive tips and workers with disabilities — a statement that received wide support due to its inclusivity of all workers.

"No one working 40 hours a week should live below the poverty line," Biden said in a speech on Thursday. "People tell me that's going to be hard to pass. Florida just passed it — as divided as that state is — they just passed it. The rest of the country is ready to move as well."

No one will be out of work again.
There will be a government job just waiting for everyone,
weather you want it or not, weather you like it or not.

What really makes a national minimum wage increase insane is the difference in the cost of living in different places.

I moved to New Mexico from South Florida. I had a 1100 SF house that was valued at $465K and made $100K per year. We were frugal and basically still lived paycheck to paycheck. This was 2005.

We moved to New Mexico and bought a 3000 SF house for $300. Better schools and low crime (in Rio Rancho). We are currently making about $50K a year and live better than we did in South Florida.

$15 an hour is South Florida is chump change.

$15 an hour is pretty good pay in New Mexico.

A business will have no problems paying $15 an hour in South Florida.

$15 an hour minimum wage will put many businesses in New Mexico in bankruptcy.

Yep. I remember when ObaMaoCare became the law of the land. My daughter had to trade a decent full time gig for two 28 hour a week jobs.

There were two bright sides:

Doing this to businesses trying to recover is idiotic!! This is ONLY about the government getting more payroll taxes, they did this in CA. the price of EVERYTHING went up so much the people getting the higher wage had it soaked up by the higher price of food, and goods NO BENEFIT what so ever EXCEPT higher taxes to government!! Businesses will not survive this!! I think people have forgotten how horrible the job market was under Obama!!! THEN look for regulations in the energy industry to be SO OVERREACHING many of those jobs would be lost!!!

"... increase to $15 an hour ... Currently set at $7.25 an hour, Biden moved to nearly double the country's minimum wage ..."

Wow, so $15 is "nearly double" $7.25, eh?

And this is from Business Insider?

Apparently the reporter is of the younger generation that won huge Participation Trophies for sitting through at least one entire Math class without playing hookey or falling asleep.

So with inflation as a result, the cost of living just goes up to the point where they are still below the poverty rate.

Agreed—cost of living is the big hidden story.

The really sharp and/or lucky people are paid from high cost areas and live in low cost areas.

In any event, the best way to starve the beast is to live in a very low cost area.

“‘No one working 40 hours a week should live below the poverty line,’Biden said.”

Ah yes—it’s only fair if EVERYONE working 40 hours a week is below the poverty line.

The ignorance of basic economics is staggering.

“”No one working 40 hours a week should live below the poverty line,” Biden said in a speech on Thursday. “

Hmmm. Sooo, what about people who work less than 40 hours per week??? Is it OK for them to live below the poverty line??? Because of the influx of cheap illegal labor, businesses are able to fill 30 hour or less week jobs, and avoid paying any benefits.

Which, at $15 per hour I bet you will see many 40 hour week jobs become less than 30. Obamacare did not help with this problem either.

Min wage needs to come up. The MW I earned in 1978 is about $14.50 in todays money.

We cannot artifically keep wages down forever. It’s creating and half and half not society.

In 1978 a 1/4 of your annual wage bought you a brand new car. Today it’s 100% of your annual wage will buy you a brand new car.
