There are still hotel/motel rooms available in the Washington area for the nights of January 5th and 6th. I had no reservation before this morning and just made one for Vienna, Virginia. That Courtyard by Marriott is only a four-minute walk to the Dunn Loring Fairfax Metro station for the Orange Line subway trains.
The latest weather forecast has the high for January 6th at 45F and the low will be 31. It is expected to be "mostly sunny".
When more of the schedule of events is established we Freepers may chose a place to meet. After the main festivities perhaps we can get together by the north side of the Air and Space Museum which is only three and a half short blocks from the Capitol Reflecting Pool.
Have you been to DC yet? Around the mall there are dozens of food trucks. Grocery stores are still open and provide plenty of ready to eat food. No one will go hungry if you bring your own food into the central area, as there are not any convenience stores or grocery stores close in. The metro system for the DC area is awesome and can get you to the party from far outside the actual city ... cheaper prices. Fly into DCA, not IAD, for easiest access to the metro.
Many people come in groups on chartered buses who come in for the day and leave, no expense for hotel rooms.
There’s some good advice on this thread from Thedonald.win and some marginal advice from yours truly

I thought the crowd were amassing in front of the Lincoln Memorial
That’s where we were during September’s Prayer March.....( 100’s of thousands)
.....and all of you would then March to the Capitol
It was a very doable walk from The Willard to the Lincoln Memorial
Can’t make it, work the day before and that day also. Can’t walk as far anymore because of degenerative arthritis in left knee and bone on bone in right knee. Would love to come and will join you in spirit, be watching FR for updates at work, as able.
Make us proud, be gracious and non-contentious. As the Bible says...a kind word turns away wrath. I know, I know...these other people might not see it the same way, but as the Bible also says, that in the day of judgment, they have nothing to accuse you of. Noting can stand against the Truth.
I pray that it is a huge turnout, that Trump is encouraged, and other real republicans on the Hill feel that the people are behind them, no matter what! I also pray that the members of Congress, both branches will stand courageously , realizing that the will of the people needs to be addressed rightly.
When we voted in December for Perdue and Loeffler, we saw a lot of blacks for Trump there, and even democrats for Trump! We may have a better turnout because I truly believe that the democrats for Trump were the disenfranchised ones. I would wager that ‘they’ saw democrat on the envelope, and even though they’d cast their votes for Trump, the ballots were set aside as Biden votes due to their party affiliation. Just saying! Since the envelopes were discarded, I’d say all those irregular, illegal ballots were prepared to change democrat votes for Trump into Biden votes, hence the “no down-party” votes on the ticket.
That is great news about the buses from Florida. Way to go you all !!!
There are posted knife restrictions whenever protests are ongoing. You might want to check that out.
It’s Amtrak. https://www.amtrak.com/home
Most of the service is concentrated in the Northeast corridor, as well as running from Chicago across the country. Anything outside the NE is sparse and they’ve recently cut the cross-country routes to 3X a week instead of daily.
The auto train is DC to Sanford FL only. There is no other location in the US that does it. Suspect it has something with getting people from the NE to their Florida snowbird destination and/or Disney.
If I wanted to take Amtrak from say, Houston TX to DC, I would have to ride the Sunset Limited from Houston to New Orleans, then take the Crescent from New Orleans to DC.
Nashville doesn’t have Amtrak service. I would have to drive to Atlanta, Memphis or St. Louis to even get started.
Make contact
She is a complete waste of Oxygen.
AMTRAK.....an entity of and to itself!
Amtrak AutoTrain .......but like I said, you can ride with out taking your auto!
We’ve taken it twice and it was fine........( a little loud and jerky at night)
....but the linens were clean ( following Covid rules)....
...the train is very clean
..and the food is delicious!
We took our car.....you have to wait for it to be removed from the train, which could be within minutes or an hour
Sanford has a small snack type gift shop.....( while you wait.....also sells some books, magazines)
...but Lorton has a wider variety better one!
We got there around 12 noon.......and they let the passengers on around 2PM and left for Washington at 4ish
And yes, It has everything to do with getting folks to Disney......!
.....so it’s a win/win for us living close to Orlando to take this train to DC!
A Blessed and Happy New Year to you and yours, Kehoe!
Thanks for the info.
Hubby said IF we were to try to go there/anywhere.....we’ll just fly 😂
That Amtrak autotrain sounds like the way to do it....if you have the time, and are in that area.
Biden already gave the weather forecast for the next 4 years cold and dark with a dash of unemployment and hunger.
I spent many an evening at Winston’s and The Tombs in the early to mid seventies.
We probably spilled beer on each other at some point.
Getting a ride OUT of DC could be problematic -- cell phone service could be down. One may need to walk out of the city, towards VA's Arlington Cemetery (for example), in order to get cell phone service and then get an Uber or a cab to your car, bus ride, or airport flight.
Strongly advice printing a map of local streets into / out of DC - to get your bearings and have options....
We will be there. If there is a ping list, put me on it.
Roger.
